Piercings lined both ears. One cut through his right eyebrow. A silver ring sat at the center of his nose. He looked like violence that had learned how to smile.

Kai Volkov was everything the rumours said and more; tall, built like a panzer tank, and no emotion evident in his blue eyes. The intimidation in his scent is enough to keep me submissive because, truth be told, he scared the Hell out of me. The other one, Viktor, not so much. He seems more like the bookish type, not a warrior, but I wouldn’t fuck with him either way. The Blood Crest pack didn’t have a terrible reputation for nothing.

Before anyone could say anything, the ballroom opened and Viktor and the other ranks were dragged inside. They were barely hanging on to life and I had to force myself to look even though I felt the urge to vomit. I didn’t want to seem weak like the sight of seeing someone like that affected me. I willed myself to keep a straight face as they were dragged to where Nikolai was. Viktor was shirtless, his tattoos severed by the cuts on his chest. One of his eyes was missing and his arms were in a weird way like they had been broken a couple of times. The other rank was in the same state as Viktor but better.

Meanwhile, the masked guys down there, of course, thought that the pretentious girl looked down on her enemies. Someone, who was standing in the front row, took two steps forward. He looked like the leader of this Voltum organization. His clothes were a little different compared to the others; they were both all white, except for the addition of a kind of short skirt on the pants and an unusual-looking buckle belt. The buckle was crystal clear, looked as fragile as glass, as if it could shatter at the slightest touch. It was a small rectangle, with an eagle-like carving in the center.

When I blink again, I notice that I’m in the forest behind the Volkov mansion. In the distance I can see lit torches and chanting; someone walks past me and I see sixteen-year-old Viktor following close behind his brothers Kon and Dimitri. We’re all dressed in black cargo shorts and no t-shirts while wearing somber expressions. I swallow hard, knowing what’s happening tonight and the backlash it caused. Kai’s becoming Alpha and naming Kon as his Beta, Dimitri as his Gamma and me as his Delta. He mentioned naming Nikolai the Epsilon when he comes of age, too.

ADELINA'S POV My heart was racing and pounding against my rib cage. Viktor stopped as if he suddenly remembered something. He reached out for his breast pocket and finally pulled out a blue mask which matched his suit. A mask, "Is this a mask ball?" I asked. "Yeah, I almost forgot." Viktor chimed before pulling out a light blue mask decorated with silver and small gemstones, contrasting his royal blue mask decorated with gold lines. My brows furrowed, the others we walked past didn't have a mask on or would they put it on before stepping into the room.

Valtor’s suit was a deep, raven black, expertly cut and fitting his body with perfect precision. His hair had been slicked back, framing the sharp lines of his sculpted face. It looked neat and unfamiliar compared to the slightly unruly way he usually wore it. His eyes, normally sharp and edged with danger, carried something softer tonight. Draped over his shoulders was a long fur robe that brushed the floor with every step. And beside him, in my white lace gown and flowing veil, we looked like day and night. Opposites in every possible way. Yet somehow perfect.

But, his ghost continued to haunt me. Viktor was like a demon, a devil, a monster. He was pure evil. And how he had survived that was beyond me I got out of the shower, and started getting ready. I dressed in a black dress, and a black jacket. I put on a black hat, and black sun glasses.
