The heavy iron-reinforced doors of the Great Hall swung wide, allowing the crisp, pine-scented highland air to rush across the stone floor.
The central courtyard was lined with a lethal, imposing wall of black leather and bared fangs. Garick, Riheirk, and Valarian stood in a tight crescent moon, their hands resting openly on their unsheathed steel. Above them, on the stone dais, Lucian stood like an ancient god of execution, his chest heaving, his silver eyes locked onto the figure who had just dismounted his pale-gray steed.
