He framed my tear-stained face with both of his large hands, his thumbs carefully wiping the moisture from my cheeks. I looked up into his striking blue eyes. "No matter what happens in this filthy world, I will never let anyone hurt you again. Do you understand me?" he vowed, his voice vibrating with a deadly, unbreakable promise. "Promise?" I whispered, my voice trembling slightly. His dark gaze dropped slowly to my trembling lips. His hand slid from my cheek to firmly cup the back of my neck. "Promise," he swore deeply. And with that single word, he leaned down and captured my lips, physically sealing his vow against my mouth.

“They’ve been active all evening. I think they like parties.” Emotion surged across his face so quickly it nearly stole my breath. His jaw tightened, and he pressed his forehead against my knee, breathing deeply as though grounding himself. “I swear to the goddess,” he murmured, “I will protect you both with everything I am.” Tears pricked my eyes. I had heard vows before—empty ones, pretty words spoken without weight. This wasn’t that. This was a promise forged in regret, growth, and hard-earned truth. “Come sit with me,” I said, tugging gently on his arm.

I asked him because the term promise has come up quite some times in the past as well. Iris beside me, her hand in mine. “Do you take her?” a voice asked. I nodded. “I already did. The moment she walked back into my life.” Her vows followed. Soft. Scared.
