Amara was already awake when I opened my eyes. She stood near the mirror adjusting the ties of her light training tunic. When she noticed I was awake, she turned toward me slightly. "The arena ceremony is today," she said. The fourth day of the Seven-Day Alpha Ceremony. The day when warriors proved their strength in the fighting arena and Alphas selected those worthy to represent them. The entire kingdom would be there. I sat up slowly, rubbing the back of my neck. "Give me a moment," I said. Amara nodded.

I had every reason to think that my sister was going to repeat the process given that it was she who took after Dad more. Breakout ceremonies weren't complicated. They were usually time-exhausting except on the night of a yellow moon. In a typical ceremony, after the musical rites were performed, the youngling who at that point must have had the aggressive growls of their wolf pounding against their chest faced a provocative 'opponent' in a wrestle. The opponent's job was to provoke the youngling's wolf out through anger by feigning a very aggressive attack. The theatrical attack had to be repeated if it failed.
