And as I looked at her, I couldn’t help but make a promise aloud, as if saying it could seal it forever:
“This time, our wedding won’t end here,” I said. “When all this is over… when the war is behind us… I’ll take you to a big, beautiful hall… with all the flowers you’ve ever dreamed of. Everything will be as you imagined, and it will be ours. This time, it will be perfect.”
She lifted her head to look at me, that serenity of hers always disarming me.
“Bright… this wedding, here, in this house, is perfect. I don’t need more. It makes me happy,” she said, smiling in a way that left me speechless.
