Reaching up, I flicked a strand of hair from his forehead. My fingertips slid across his skin and down his neck. “When humans get married they go on a honeymoon. It’s like a holiday where it’s just the two of them,” I explained.

A reluctant smile tugged at my lips. "Alright," I said. "One coffee.” We walked to the café in comfortable silence. It was a small place tucked between two larger buildings, warm and inviting with the scent of fresh coffee and pastries filling the air. "I'm Lina," she said, tucking her hair behind her ear. "And yes, I'm married. My husband is an idiot, but he's my idiot. You know how it is?" I blinked. "I'm Elara. And I'm also married."

“Do you think it’s really over?” Nathan let out a slow breath. "For the time being. There will always be another war, though, if that's one thing I've learnt. In his arms, Anita swivelled, looking into his eyes. "After that, we battle together." His lips curled into a gentle smile. “Always.” Their lips locked in a kiss that included all of their unspoken vows and promises. This was no longer merely a contract. It lasted forever.

He pressed his lips to my ear. “We’re getting married again,” he whispered. “Tomorrow?” I teased. “Tomorrow,” he said, completely serious. “I’m not waiting another second to call you my wife for the rest of our lives.” I laughed into his neck. The leukemia was gone. The contracts were ash. The fear still lived in the corners sometimes, but it was small now (small enough to fit in the palm of the hand that held ours). We had won. And tomorrow (or the day after, or the day after that), we would stand in the garden under the same oak tree and promise each other forever all over again.
