Since they were kids, (except for Hugh since he grew up with his family) they never experienced the fun of what ordinary kids do—running all around the field playing outdoor games, building friendships with the other kids, and more. What did they usually practice ahead of time? Training, fighting, and putting their lives at risk. At a very young age, they never felt like a real kid.
Precisely, they never knew what friendship means. They don't treat one another as friends, possibly, 'acquaintance' would fit as a term to what they are right now.
