Tonight, I needed answers. I walked slowly, almost hesitant, as I moved towards the bookshelf at the far end of the room. The dim light from the moon filtered through the curtains, casting long, eerie shadows across the polished floor. The shelves were lined with books—old, leather-bound volumes that probably held more knowledge than I could ever comprehend. I ran my fingers over the spines, brushing lightly, almost as if I expected one of them to whisper something to me.

My vertigo swam for a moment before my eyes adjusted to the new light. Remi laced my fingers with his and started us down the main hallways. There was no light source, but the surfaces seemed to reflect light just like the leaves and the bark in the forest outside. It was the oddest sensation. The walls were covered in pictographs, but they were outlined in multiple colors of light. It was beautiful. They weren't Egyptian style, but they were similar in how they told a story. It was almost as if it was a time line as we walked down the hall.

Athina and the rest of her family had packed everything by the time the sun was starting to set down a little, to welcome the evening. Evening a time that belonged neither to the day nor the middle. It was simply a time in the middle, that connected the day to the night. The evening was a lost princess trying to choose between the light and darkness. Much like that Athina, who stood in between the darkness, Zayden and the light which was the life she was currently living. When observing light versus darkness, the light seemed to answer. But doesn't the darkness need to reach the light?

A ray of sunshine streams in at an angle, shimmering in the air, reminding me of the picture in our mythology textbook of a human god visiting a female on earth as a shower of gold. The light lands on a tableau a few yards from the pool—two ratty upholstered chairs on either side of an overturned barrel. A knitting bag spilling over with yarn sits by the foot of one chair. On the seat of the other, there’s a thick, clothbound book left open and upside down to hold the reader’s place. I can’t make out the title on the spine from here. This is a strange place. Life is lived out in the open. Shamelessly.

He opened the book and then nothing happened. And then, the moment of truth arrived. The librarian flipped over to the next page, and a bright light burst forth, illuminating the library. “Yes!” I said excitedly as I watched from behind the doors. The air was filled with a still energy and the books on the shelves seemed to stir, as if awakening from a long slumber. I was Afraid the manor would awaken but I had to put faith in my capacity. As the light faded, the librarian remained motionless. Apparently trapped in my spell. Didn't take long for gravity to take over and his head was fast asleep on the table.
