Even the night animals had gone silent. Then, in the distance, a single howl pierced the air. It wasn’t from their wolves, and it wasn’t close, but it was coming. Fast.

Outside, the night stirred—an owl hooted, and far off in the forest, something howled. Not wolf. Not witch. Something in-between.

The night sky was aglow with bright twinkle lights. The pale crescent moon shone like a silvery claw in the night sky which I thought was staring back at me. I averted my gaze to the blanket of stars that stretched to infinity. I could still hear the chattering and voice of people faraway that broke the silence of the night. "Hmm...". I hummed as I closed my eyes and inhaled the cold breeze that grazed my skin.

I nodded, he gave me a hug and we went on our way. I loved walking in the woods at night. The whistling of the wind as it swayed the trees, the quiet that engulfed the woods making it a relaxing walk home where I could have my thoughts to myself. I was halfway home when I heard what sounded like a whisper. I stopped in my tracks as I looked around, paying close attention to my surrounding. The cold wind hit my face, my hair blown back. I chuckled as I shook my head, assuring myself that it was nothing. I had walked through this path before. I continued to walk, as I relax a bit.

“There’s nothing out there.” The wind picked up a bit, causing the leaves and the blossoms on the trees to bristle in the chilly night air. I froze for a second, fear gripping me, before I got ahold of myself again and continued to walk. As I walked, I started whistling a soft tune to myself to ease my nerves. It was a sweet tune that rang out through the night, and the longer I went, the more confident I felt. The wind picked up a little more, causing the trees to sway and rub up against each other. Their rough bark created a horrible groaning sound in the air, but I ignored it as best I could and whistled a little bit louder, picking up my pace as I went.

It was a small whistle, intricately designed with a wolf's head on top. "Tiffany, look," Hailey whispered, pointing at the whistle. "Maybe that's what's causing the noise." Curiosity outweighing their fear, Tiffany carefully picked up the whistle. It felt cold and strangely powerful in her hands. It was getting darker and darker until I could barely tell where the horizon ended. Then, just as night took over, the sky shifted into a deep shade of crimson. That was when I heard the howling. It was distant, like an echo, but it grew louder and closer every second. The sound crawled under my skin. I knew that howl. Nightstalkers. They were near. My heartbeat raced, and I swallowed hard. My throat went dry and sore from screaming earlier, calling for help no one answered.

“I’m going to finish this at home. I’ll see you later, Ruby.” “See you at home!” I left the library without another word. It was late in the evening and the sun had set long ago. I never really minded walking alone at night. Sometimes I enjoyed solitude. I walked down the narrow sidewalks in the direction of Ruby’s apartment when I heard whistling coming from the other side of the street. There were a couple of guys standing outside of a bar. They were obviously drunk as they whistled at me. “Hey, pretty lady. How about you come over here and we can show you a good night,” one of them called.
