“Past me was so helpful.” I tore the flap open and dug inside—old books, loose beads from a broken bracelet, a cracked snow globe, and an old notebook from my late teenage years. No balm. I let out another irritated sigh, pressing my palm against my forehead. The attic was already warm, and the more I moved, the more suffocating it felt. “Ouch—okay, okay, bad idea,” I hissed through my teeth, readjusting my stance. “Just… stay still. It was cold and I felt as though I had stepped into a crypt. Maybe it was a crypt after all. Margaret pulled the switch on and the place was flooded with light. There were so many cartons laying on the floor with a large sheet thrown over several of them gathered together. I wished she would pull the curtains open and let the sunlight in. I picked up a large book and cleaned the dust from it and opened it. On the first page was a large scrawl in Flora's handwriting. It read simply, “FLORA”.

It was such an interesting story! I stood up and search for more and found a book in another aisle. I started reading it until I got pulled in. It was wonderful! Even Auntie Harriet donated her old books. We called it "Voiceback." One Friday afternoon, Williams walked in with a bouquet of wildflowers. He didn't say much-just stood at the doorway, watching me help a girl draft her first short story. After the girl left, he handed me the flowers and smiled. "You didn't tell me you declined the government offer," he said. I shrugged. "Didn't feel like something I needed to announce." He looked around the room-at the bookshelf, the bulletin board filled with hand-written letters, the photo of me and Emily on the wall. Then he turned to me again.
