Millie's P.O.V. I stared at the dead squirrel on my pillow and screamed. Not because I was terrified of it but because I laid down next to it. My face almost touched its disgusting body. "That's the point, my little sunflower," "Mom, Mom, look what I drew!" Zayne shouted. I pushed my nose away from her ear to look down at my son. He was eagerly and excitedly holding up a large book, bouncing as if he were planning to rocket himself to the moon. In his book was a nice drawing of… Do you know that squirrel in the Ice Age movie who is still chasing his nut? That's the one. The squirrel was chasing his nut while being chased by a dragon. Wow, that's a nice dragon.

I said, pulling it gently out. Up close, it was even cuter. Too cute. Dangerously cute. The kind of cute that probably murdered things in their sleep. “You followed me here? Seriously?” The creature blinked its huge eyes at me. Then—its ears perked. Before I could blink, it launched itself out of my hands, hit the ground, and sprinted straight toward a squirrel on a nearby branch. The squirrel barely squeaked. Chomp. Crunch. Rip. In two seconds flat, the squirrel was gone.

“‘She knew that the woods held secrets, but she also knew she belonged there.’” I listened, enraptured, my pain momentarily forgotten. At some point, she went off-script, adding her own spin to the tale. “‘You see,’” she continued, leaning in close, “‘Lila had a gift. She could speak to the animals, understand their worries and joys.’” I laughed weakly, my feverish mind imagining the scenes. “Did she talk to squirrels, too?” Aunt Gertrude smiled, her eyes twinkling. “Oh, especially the squirrels. They were the biggest gossips in the woods.”

It was a small comfort in my otherwise lonely world. "Do you live here, in this tree ?" I asked the squirrel, curious about its home in the forest. The squirrel tilted its head, as if contemplating my question, before scurrying up the tree to a cozy nest hidden among the leaves. "I don't want to lose you," I whispered, feeling a sense of connection with the creature. The squirrel chattered softly in response as if understanding my words, but I was, as he ran out of sight, disappearing into the branches above.

Please God, save me. Positioning the vase I gave a hard pull at the clothe as half of it came out of the rod, and something small brownish caught my eyes. I force-ceased my action in the mid-air, my mouth pursed. Huh? A squirrel sat on the windowsill eating something. As its eyes found a glimpse of me it jumped on the terrace and with another couple leaps, it was out of the building and back in its home at the giant tree beside. "Ninja stalker squirrel, was it?" I shook my head chuckling to myself.

I can see the details of its face—the tiny nose black and twitching, the whiskers long and white, sensing the air, reading the world through vibration and scent, the small mouth with lips pulled back slightly showing the edge of one orange incisor. The squirrel's nose extends toward my hand and the whiskers reach it first, touching my fingers so lightly I almost don't feel it, testing. It sniffs. The whiskers brush my palm and the sensation is ticklish, makes me want to pull away, but I hold still, hold perfectly still like Madison playing a tree, rooted. The squirrel looks up at me then. “Guess whose fault that is?” Vish muttered, giving her a side-look before silently continuing with her lunch. “Hey, look, I was scared, alright. I just couldn’t risk it all. I’m sorry. I saw the authorities, and I froze—” Karima tried explaining herself. “I don’t get it. No one cared about the squirrels before… so why now? What makes this squirrel so different? Why’s he such a big deal?” Vincent asked, his voice muffled by the book levitating in front of his face.

That morning, I walked in the forest for hours on end, stepping on the dried leaves and twigs. Every few minutes I would see something I wanted to show my mum or dad and then realize that I no longer had them. It was lonely and scared, but I kept on walking. Throughout that day, I saw all sorts of creatures and animals, but for some reason, they stuck by me. A squirrel followed me the farthest, going along with me for hours on end. He would jump in the trees while we walked, and when he sensed danger, he would come to a stop. At night I would light a fire under the trees to ward away the animals that would come near me.

It seemed to be the origin of the noise, and I couldn't help but wonder what creature might be concealed within it this time. Taking a step toward the shrub once again, I let out a breath, bracing myself for whatever creature might burst forth. Another swoosh behind me, and I pivoted to witness a creature right where the cat had been. But this time, it wasn't a cat; it was a... "Squirrel!" I gritted my teeth in frustration. The squirrel, much like the cat, darted into the dark woods as if something had spooked it away, despite me not having moved an inch.
