I whispered to myself.
Right there, barely visible in the shadows, was a small squirrel. It was trembling, struggling to move, its body awkwardly twisted like it was stuck or injured. Carefully, I reached in and scooped it up, being as gentle as possible. I then placed it down on the patch of grass nearby, hoping it would get up and dash away.
But it didn’t. It just stayed there.
