Not the distant hush she was used to—but a deep, thunderous crash, like waves slamming directly beneath the palace.

The palace stood miles inland.
Yet the sound rose and fell, relentless, as though the ocean had crept closer while no one was looking.
Becky stepped back, pulse racing.
“No,” she whispered.
The wind surged, whipping her hair around her face. For a moment, she thought she heard something beneath the roar.
A note.
A hum.
Almost like a song.
Her hands flew to her ears. “Stop it!”
The sound only grew louder.
Somewhere far beyond the palace walls, waves answered one another, rising higher, stronger, as if called by something ancient and patient.
