When I finally drifted, it wasn’t rest.
Flames roared through my dreams, licking up the walls of Aurelian House, but I wasn’t afraid. I was the fire. I stood at the center, bare feet sinking into scorched stone, wings stretching wide behind me. Not metaphorical wings, real ones, powerful, gleaming like molten gold streaked with crimson veins. I should have been terrified, but instead the fire whispered through me, low and hungry.
"Claim them."
The voice wasn’t human. It wasn’t even mine, not entirely. It was deeper, older. My dragon, the side of me I kept locked down so tight it had started bleeding into my nights.
