I didn’t want to pull on my wings because I really liked the hoodie I was wearing, and my wings would make mincemeat of it. I caught her eyes and all I could see was anger and hatred boiling in them. I pushed with my aura so hard my hands felt like fire against her arms. She started making a sound that was close to pain and then suddenly Cash pulled us apart. I was now standing behind Cash as he faced the clawing wolf himself. “Stop it, before you get hurt!” Cash growled at her. She immediately stopped and started sobbing as she quickly rubbed the burn marks on her arms that my hands had left behind.

They flare on either side of me and when I stand, the points arch to encompass a wide scope of the ground, causing the others to back away in shock. Because I have wings. Wings of fire.

I grasp onto that flow and press into it, pushing spikes into her veins, crawling up her arms, her— Pain blossoms in my arms, my legs. My torso’s on fire and I scream. Carita laughs. “Remember that you aren’t the only illusionist here, birdie.” Disbelief slides from my thoughts, my grip on reality slipping into pain and darkness. But I can’t look away from Vito; I have to make sure he’s okay. “Nighty night,” she whispers, pressing a thumb against my forehead. Vito’s vibrant wings fade from my vision, his amber eyes blurring into the landscape.

His presence was steady, unyielding, even as his voice cracked with urgency. “Don’t let it take you, Xenia! Stay with me!” The Architect only watched, hands folded inside their dark sleeves, their hood angled as if this was all… entertainment. My anger burned hotter than my flames. “You think this is a game?” I roared. I got a response from the fire. After stretching and twisting, it took the form of wings extending from my shoulders and a flurry of sparks encircling me. The wolves stumbled, hissing where my wings touched their smoky bodies.

I say, twisting my head so I can see my image on my mate's chest. When Emmi and Phoenix marked Ajax, her image covered his entire chest and stomach. Unlike her, I don’t have a feathery tail, so I had to make do. I growl with possessive pleasure when I see my mark on Yhen's chest. Within the courtyard, there was a scorch mark radiating out from a central point, where Ember stood utterly naked, wings spread. The wings were not wings as Samuel’s were, like those of a bat covered in black membrane, rather Ember’s wings were those of fire, the flickering flame generating enough heat to lift the ends of her long red hair.

Wyatt immediately covered my eyes for me, “He wants you to touch him Brianna, so don’t be scared of him, you can feel his wings and anything else you see fit.” I could feel a whoosh of warm air around us and a loud, piercing, squawking sound as Wyatt dropped his hands. The boy's sense of awe rippled through me as my eyes took in the Phoenix, temporarily covered in flames before it quickly snuffed the flames out and left a breathtaking bird in its place.
