The Wolf's Call (Book 1)
Smoke clings faintly to his coat, and his voice is low when he speaks to her.
There’s love in it, reverence. He leans close, and the baby wriggles into his hands as though it belongs to him entirely. His smile is fleeting, but real. For a moment, the world feels whole.
But then out of nowhere, the fire surges. It leaps from the hearth like a living beast, snapping up the walls, clawing at the beams.
"No..." I whisper as the family begin trying to escape the inferno.
The air thickens with smoke, heat slams against my face, scorching my lungs. The baby wails, a piercing shriek that drowns every other sound.
