I snatched the gun from his hands, destroying his failed attempt to show his masculinity. “Now you tell me boy, which of these cuties you want to take home?” I asked, aiming the gun at the cans.

The day our family went on vacation to an island resort, my younger sister, Alana Fisher, climbed over a safety railing to get the perfect photo. She lost her footing and, in her panic, dragged me into the ocean with her. The rescue crew was about to pull me out first since I was closer when Mom suddenly took a yellowed paper coupon from her wallet and tossed it toward me. "Corinne, let Alana get on the rescue boat first! This is the last thing your father and I will ever ask you to grant!" When I was seven, I couldn't afford birthday presents for my parents, so I drew a hundred wish coupons by hand. Each one read: [Redeem this coupon for one wish. If I kept moving, kept talking, kept working, maybe my thoughts wouldn’t circle back to him. They did anyway. By midmorning, I’d settled two more disputes, inspected the infirmary again, and spent some time with the pups in the learning halls. At least winnie had been happy to see me. I knelt beside her, her chubby fingers sticky with honey as she proudly showed me a crude drawing. “That’s very good,” I told her sincerely. “Who’s this?” “That’s you,” she said confidently, pointing to a crooked stick figure with a circle crown. “And that’s me.”

I was too busy trying to walk in a straight line without breaking my ankle. When I looked up, he was leaning against the frame, arms crossed, and his face was unreadable.

I saw a figure running to the gate and then it disappeared, literally passed through the gate. Could witches do that? There was no time to think. I had to act fast. “Willow. What’s going on? Where are you rushing off to?” I turned to see Lucas walking to me I pointed at the gate “Winnie. She ran away. We need to find her” He looked genuinely confused. “Who is Winnie?” “The Wizard king’s ten year old daughter” He recaliberated quickly. “She’s a witch, she could be anywhere” He was right. But I knew Winnie a little. Where could she be? It hit me. “She likes attention. I think I know where she went”

"I rarely joke about things like this, Nathan." "Maverick 'Maybe' Rockwell? The hockey captain?" My voice cracked slightly, my usual composure slipping. "Sir, the guy has his face on banners outside the stadium. He has a literal fan club and he's a partying freak, disruptive, and quite frankly, his crowd is exactly what I spend my entire life avoiding."

she read aloud. "Olena?" John asked. "Who’s that?" "She’s a beautiful girl in my class," he replied. Winnie and John glanced at each other and chuckled softly. "Do you like her?" John asked as she shot him a stare. "He’s still a kid," Winnie whispered to John just as he was about to respond. Suddenly, he noticed Evelyn’s legs move. "She’s going to wake up," John said, and Winnie quickly turned to look at her. "Life is so cruel to the weak wolves," Winnie murmured.
