I stretched slowly, wincing at the ache on my back, then swung my legs over the side of the bed. I headed to the bathroom to wash up, splashing cool water on my face in an attempt to shake off the fog in my mind. The events of yesterday still felt like a dream. I stared at my reflection for a long moment, noting the faint bruise on my cheek from the drunk man’s slap.

I was laying in bed, staring at the ceiling when I heard the ringing. I rolled over to see Zak's contact picture flashing on the screen of my laptop as he called me. Sitting up, I ran my fingers through my tangled hair, and answered the video call. Waving at him as he answered, I saw his brief smile before it dropped and morphed into a look of concern. It occurred to me as I caught a glimpse of myself in the upper corner of the screen that I had a deep cut and bruise on my face that came with an explanation I didn't want to give.

My eyes widened as a sharp sting hit my cheek. My face had been pressed against my laptop keyboard all night I was sure the keys had left little imprints on my skin.

Edric had slapped me hard on the face when I tried to kick him off me. My body felt like a truck ran over it. With a lot of struggle, I got out of bed, dressed my wounds, and made myself ready for the day. As I made breakfast I wanted to break down and just cry my heart out. Every movement caused a lot of pain and it was then it hit me this could be a normal thing in my life right now.
