But the smoke creature was moving toward the door again, and Jax was on the other side of it. I stepped forward and put both hands into the smoke. The cold of it hit me first, a cold that went past skin and into something deeper. And then my wolf came up without warning, not the slow reluctant response I had expected but a full surge, a snarl that I felt in my teeth and my chest and my hands simultaneously. The smoke recoiled. Not just buckled the way it had with Kael. It recoiled, pulling back from my hands like something burned, the shape losing coherence at the edges, the churning inside it going frantic.

I raised my hand and resolutely tore off the veil from my head. "Lucian," I called out as I looked at him, my voice terrifyingly calm. "We're over." I extended my hand toward Roxanne. She immediately understood, lighting the sachet and smashing it on the ground. Acrid smoke instantly filled the air. "Damn it, what's that smell?" "My eyes are burning!" "What did they light?" The pungent smoke threw the scene into instant chaos. The werewolves lost their prized vision and sense of smell, while Roxanne and I escaped the pack in the confusion.

HUNTER POV The blue fire didn't just burn; it hissed like a nest of disturbed vipers, consuming the oxygen in the clearing at a terrifying speed. The smoke was thick and suffocating, stinging my eyes and scraping against the back of my throat. My wolf was pacing frantically within my mind, his usual arrogance entirely replaced by survival instinct. "The path back to the camp is completely cut off," he warned, his voice echoing sharply over the roaring flames. "If we stay here, the smoke will drop us before the fire even touches our skin."

Smoke repeated, sounding more confused than ever. "Your wound is infected, and whatever the attacker's claws were infected with spread to your wounds," he explained after returning to her side. Smoke stared at him doubtfully as he began chewing a few of the newly collected leaves into a poultice. "Aloe and chervil should be more than enough to treat your wounds, if I do this right. But it will sting." Time seemed to slow down as Scorchheart applied the wounds in question. Smoke winced at the sudden pain, but it only lasted for a few heartbeats. Once Scorchheart was finished, he stepped back and rewound cobwebs over her wounds to keep them from getting any worse.

He smirks while looking at she-wolf. Raven looked at the wolf in shock. He couldn't ever expect to get help from Lucy wolf. Lucy came towards Raven and looked at him closely. Raven falls on the ground as his powers are weak and couldn't defend himself. Lucy licks his face to heal his brusies. Raven looked at her with gratitude. His eyes and body were weak with the fights. His bruises are slow to heal. Marcus came forward silently and attack Lucy with his full power. He holds her in his mouth and stomped her on the ground. He was about to lavish her with his lusty desires when suddenly the sky thunders and smoke spread in the whole area. The joyful screams of evil turn into mourning and pains

Every breath turned to steam before vanishing into the dead air. “Keep tight,” I muttered, my voice barely audible over the crunching beneath us. We were ghosts moving in white hell. Then—a scent. Faint. Bitter. Smoky. Sootshade. A rare herb. Burn it, and wolves can’t pick up shit. That’s what they were using. Smart bastards. I narrowed my eyes. I couldn't see jack through the dense dark. My night goggles flickered for a second—interference. Fuck. Then it moved.

I felt like a spare part, not knowing what to do as I stared in horror at the scene before me. I distantly heard the sounds of running wolves and wondered if Carter had called for back up or if we were about to have a whole host of other issues. As much as these woods were typically safe, there was never usually wolves fighting in them to attract rogues. The added worry disappeared however when I watched Smoke pin Carter to the forest floor and open his jaw ready to rip out the mans throat.

But just as I was about to make my escape, a huge gray wolf emerged from the smoke and lunged toward me. My heart leaped into my throat as I saw the wolf lunge toward me. Its snarling face and bared teeth were a mere centimeters away when suddenly it froze, eyes wide and fixed on me. It lay still, lifeless against the edge of the jeep. I was dumbstruck, my jaw hung open in shock. I didn't need to question what had happened since I felt a rush of air around me and as the smoke dissipated, I saw the scene before me. Lucien and his men were battling the pack of wolves, their eyes blazing red, their demonic powers at work.

But the celebration didn’t last. Thick smoke poured through the forest, heavy and suffocating. It rose in dark waves until the sky above was swallowed by a grey haze. The air grew so thick we could barely see a few steps in front of us. Luckily, the leather mask the werewolf craftsmen had prepared for us did their job. The fabric filtered out most of the smoke, enough to keep our lungs from burning. Without them, we probably would have dropped to the ground coughing within minutes. Even so, the heat was becoming unbearable.

Why couldn’t I stop thinking about her? I lit another cigarette. At this point, my liver was probably fried, and my lungs were most likely black. As a werewolf, I could heal easily, but now, this stuff was dangerous—and yet, I didn’t really care. I took a slow drag, letting the smoke curl around me. One puff, then another. Too soon, the stick burned down to nothing. I reached out for another cigarette; the packet was empty.
