The smoke descended thickly, burning my eyes, making them water until I could barely see.
“Father!” I called again, stumbling, but he did not turn. He only ran, faster and faster, disappearing into the darkness around the burning house.
And that was when I realized.
In the middle of the room, between the tongues of fire licking the low ceiling, there was a woman. A redhead. Her hair seemed to catch fire along with the house, lighting up her soot-covered face.
She did not run.
She did not try to escape.
