' I nearly snort out loud at Zahra’s comment. Out of the corner of my eye I watch Max standing with a beer, listening to Ralph and Noah. There’s an air of pain around him. He’s not the same quiet, serious boy I left behind. He’s a sad, brooding man now, all broad shoulders and muscle hiding the cracks underneath.

"Good. Lets just get back to the warehouse. Get behind the walls." The four-kilometer drive felt like it took hours. Zion's growl of frustration echoed his unease about Sasha's tale of escape, a story he had doubted yet reluctantly accepted, and now he faced yet another act of treachery. Zion growled as Sasha, with a sorrowful expression, apologized, explaining she had no choice since Max was holding her children captive. In anger, Max shoved Sasha aside and fatally shot her. Jessica let out a scream, witnessing a dead body for the first time. Meanwhile, Marco, approaching from behind the house, charged at Max, disarming him. As they grappled on the ground, Zion seized the opportunity to aim the gun at Max.

He froze in place and shallowed his breathing while he looked to see two more walking not far behind her. He was grateful that his leg had stopped bleeding heavily and that he’d gutted the deer so that the smell of its blood would overshadow the smell of his own. Even if it was only a small amount of blood oozing from him at that point, the breeze was blowing in their direction and he didn’t trust that the zombies wouldn’t have picked up on its scent, had the deer not been there. After all, they may look like a human, but their humanity was long gone. They were mindless, unmerciful predators who were driven by animal instinct.

Zach whispered to Bryan as his gaze remained on Nevea the whole time. Bryan’s eyes blanked, then, in a second, his hand moved against his will to shot Max right on his head. He could hear Max yell what he was about to do, but he couldn’t answer and stop his motion. Before he knew it, Max’s head had already burst. Second after, another gunshot followed. This time, Bryan aimed it at himself. Zach had killed the two best hunters without even sweating. Zach then moved to Nevea. He scooped her weak body to his. His eyes searched her blue eyes, wanting to look at her directly, to make sure that he wasn’t late and that his Nevea was very much alive and breathing in his hands.

Thorne was more concerned with Magicks and History books than girls. His final option was Kairos. It was, arguably, the worst option. Kairos loathed Zora. They were supposed to be battling it out on the sparring mat in a few weeks. But Kairos was always asking girls on dates or to events. If Maximus could make sure that Kairos never found out his date was Zora, asking for Kairos’s advice may have been worth it. With yet another sigh, Max cursed the Gods one last time before taking off towards Kairos’s room.
