The cursor blinked at me like a challenge. Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes and let the noise in my head fade away. On the page. In my head, I scrawled the word in big, ugly handwriting, underlining it twice. UP. The ink hated that. It lurched around us, trying to swirl the other way, trying to drag us down, down, down. But the words didn’t care. They twisted. Lifted. Rearranged themselves into something new. Around me and Corvin, lines of text rose in spirals, sentences linking end to beginning, forming rungs. Paragraphs bent at right angles. Question marks hooked onto commas. Em dashes stretched, stiffening into rails.

Dela wrote the document in four days. Not because she was rushing. Because she had been writing it in her head since the center opened and the page was simply catching up to what was already clear. She brought it to me on the fourth morning. Twelve pages. The specific language she had developed through weeks of receiving wolves at the center. Seated on their respective seaweed mats on the stone floor, they begin to pour their hearts out onto the paper, yearning to express the things they didn't get the chance to tell their beloveds during their brief visit. With every stroke of the quill, their thoughts and feelings find voice, carefully selecting words that convey the depth of their love and longing.

He winked as he headed to the door. Alone with myself, I reached into the bag for the sticky note. The thin line the pen made on paper proves that the author is a fine writer. Putting the note back in my bag safely, I turned to the pile of files on my desk. It’s going to be a long day.

“I do not know what to write yet. I do not want my words to sound too strong.” Neri took her by the arm and guided her toward the table. “Sit. You will write something simple.
