I had no idea what I was writing and I had deleted what I wrote last night. I was scrolling through my F******k when I remembered I hadn’t texted Alanna back. I still hadn’t heard back from Jake and it was almost 11 o’clock. Maybe I should text him and cancel. I wasn’t leaving the house today anyway. First I had to text Alanna back. ‘Thank you! Why did he say something?’ Why was it so hard to write about yourself? What was I suppose to put in it? I started to type what I was thinking. I began with my gran raising me, about my mom passing when I was young, my life growing up in Florida.

I sat there for a moment, my reflection staring back at me like it was waiting for something. Then I reached for my pen. For the first time that day, the page didn’t feel empty. I started writing. About how a stranger’s voice had sounded warm. Like it wasn’t trying to take anything from me.

He edited. He edited with the same rigour he applied to everything he wrote, which was considerable. He cut the four pages to one. He cut the one page to six sentences. Six sentences. He read them back. They were right. The first sentence was about the hotel bar. Not the cashier's cheque—that was transactional, that was business, that wasn't what the vows were for. The first sentence was about the moment when he'd realised that the person across from him was not a problem to be solved but a person to be known.

I liked Tristan’s silence and Alex’s warmth and Marilyn’s softness. I liked waking up without wondering where my mother had run off to that morning. I liked walking into a kitchen where someone asked if I wanted breakfast instead of telling me to search for spare change. I liked being something other than a problem. But liking things got people killed. My throat tightened. I lowered my pen to the paper. I didn’t write sentences. I didn’t write everything in order. I wrote the truth in scattered pieces — enough for them to understand what I couldn’t say out loud.

It is the crime itself, committed twice, once against you and once against the version of myself I might have become if I had made myself look at your face before I ended your life with it.
