Curiosity got the better of me and I couldn't resist asking, "What is inside that package?" My mind became fixated on the envelope again. As I watched it sitting on the desk, a sense of anticipation washed over me - I just had to know what was inside. Whatever suspicions I had earlier were no longer relevant; my curiosity had taken hold. Without hesitation, I picked up the envelope, examining it from all angles. With a gentle tear, I revealed its contents and took a deep breath. "A letter..." I murmured, my eyes landing on the carefully written note. The urge to discover its message compelled me to find a comfortable place to sit so I could dive into its words.

One moment he was looking at it. The next he said: "Aria." I looked at him. He had the quality he had when something was important — the complete present attention, the Zane-full-focus that was different from his ordinary attention, which was already significant. He said: "I want to ask you something." I held his gaze.

I want to tell you what was in me, looking at him, because I have not yet found a clean way to describe it and I am going to try. What was in me was not fear. Fear had been a register I had been visiting on and off for two months, and the register had not arrived with me into the front room. His jaw flexed. For a second, something flashed across his face. Surprise. Maybe. I wasn’t sure. Then it disappeared. “Careful, James.” “Why?” His eyes narrowed slightly. “Because the second people think you’re interesting enough to argue with…” His gaze swept briefly over me. “…they start paying attention.” The words sent a chill through me. Because he wasn’t entirely wrong. Attention wasn’t usually a good thing for me. Still, I lifted my chin. “Maybe that’s your problem.”

This declaration acted as a potent spell, compelling me to sit upright, each fiber of my being attuned to his every syllable. With a renewed focus, I directed my full attention towards him, my curiosity now piqued to an almost unbearable degree. The question burned on my lips, aching to be released, "What is it?" His response was not immediate, and the weight of his silence hung in the air like a shroud of anticipation.
