He was the perfect solution to my problems, but there was only one condition he asked before promising me his ‘I do. “Don’t fall for me,” was his unbreakable rule. I laughed at him that day, thinking how easy it is to follow his stupid rule. I’m in love with my ex-fiance, his younger brother Calvin, so what could possibly go wrong? I agreed without hesitation, seeing him as the ticket out of my life’s predicament. Like a raging wave, the realization of my vow’s weight crashed on me. How can I fulfill my promise, when even in the darkness and danger that surrounds him, I’m hauled like a moth to a flame?

I raised my hand, stopping Anjali from scolding her. "Deal. " I said as she gave me her pinky finger, I raised my brow in confusion. She asked, "Promise?" Oh my goodness! I am gonna melt right away, "Promise, " I let out, laughing. "So can we go now?" She questions excitedly. But before I could reply, Anjali interrupts, "Not now, baby, he's here to talk about something important to Mama, " She explains. She flashes a sad look, "Don't worry, angel, I always keep my promise, " I stated, her face soon lifts in a grin.

"Anything else?" Chase pressed. My nose stung with the threat of tears, and I ducked my head to hide it. "Nope." He grinned. "Are you gonna cry?" My eyes burned, but he leaned down low, peeking up at me with that cheeky expression. "For real? Crying over my leave?" This guy was seriously messed up, but somehow, the urge to cry evaporated in the face of his playfulness. I shoved him away, annoyed but fighting a smile. "You're crazy!"

I could still feel it under my skin—like a signature, like a promise, like the moment a match thinks about being struck and decides it wants to be fire. “Paper,” I said softly, the word leaving a temporary fog on the window. “Promises.” And because I refused, on principle, to be the first to look away, I stood and let the city look back until dawn found us both.

He looked at her and she immediately took that as a sign to step in. “Claire, we have to make sure grandmama is in good health first before everything else, okay? We’ll go on the beach trip once everything’s settled,” She assured her despite her not knowing if will even fall through. “You promise?” She gave both of them the puppy eyes. Kai licked his lips, briefly glancing at her before looking at their daughter with a smile on his face. “Promise, my love.” Then she looked at her mom who’s watching them, not knowing how to react.
