Rhea called out, her voice echoing off the obsidian bark of the tree. A low groan came from a pile of fungal moss near the base of the roots. Zane was dragging himself toward them, his face pale and his silver-blue eyes wide with a bewildered, child-like terror. He was clutching his chest, his fingers digging into his furs as if he were trying to find something he had lost. "It's gone, Ash," Zane wheezed, looking up at his brother. "The howl... the silver... I can't find it. I’m empty."

I cock my head to the side and look up at Hunji, *He doesn’t carry his mother's scent* I mentally connect with him. *I noticed that too* He gruffs back through the link. “My name is Zane. Later that night, Zane stood alone in the room Andrei had given him, staring out the tall windows into the pitch-dark forest beyond. His reflection stared back. A vase. A weapon. A ghost. What would he become? He turned from the window, and saw it— A new suit hanging on the wall. Black silk. Tailored. Deadly. And beside it, a small black box on the dresser. Zane opened it. Inside was a collar. Not the gold one from the auction. This one was silver. Sleek. Almost elegant. Not a cage. A symbol. His fingers hovered over it. He didn’t pick it up.

He nodded toward the man who’d challenged me at the barrier. I had to admit, I respected him for it. He hadn’t backed down—not even from me. He had Alpha potential written all over him. “Go on then,” Rex teased suddenly, glancing between him and Rose. “Introduce yourself, Zane.” I narrowed my eyes, already sensing there was more here than they were saying. Although Zane is already used to such reaction when others see his birthmark on the chest, it still never gets old. “What’s that?” Zane smiled and wiped his chest with his own towel and proudly showed his chest to his classmate. “My birthmark. Zane uttered smugly as he sat down in the chair opposite her desk, promptly perching his expensive shoes on top. “What the hell do you know about “these things” anyway, Smith?” She retorted as she shoved his feet off the end of her desk. Zane Smith was a fixer, Reaperr’s fixer, and he was as dangerous as a live grenade. In any other situation, London would have tip-toed around him, giving him a wide birth to do his bidding, but, she could feel the noose around her neck, and this time, not in a good way.
