"Why is it so loud this early..." His voice was cut off. On the screen back in the bunker, Julian's pupils widened. He froze as if someone had cast a curse on him. The once-bustling downtown streets had become a hellscape. Burning vehicle wrecks were everywhere. Torn flesh and innards littered the ground, and hundreds, maybe thousands, of bloodstained zombies staggered through the streets. One zombie lay sprawled on the hood of a sedan, greedily gnawing on a human leg.

I knew better; the fish I gave her was boneless. Jane's lips trembled as she tried to steady her voice, "That's because the nurses cleaned her up before they brought her here." "Cleaned her up, huh?" My voice turned icy. "Then answer me this: after death, the body cools, starting with the limbs." I pressed down on my daughter's rigid arms and belly. "So why is her stomach colder than her arms and legs?" I yanked up her sleeve to reveal more than just cold skin. "Livor mortis already? That was fast."

Day one. The game began. Gunshots echoed from outside. I watched on the studio's security monitor as dozens of slow-moving figures shambled around the estate. Their skin was a sickly grey, their eyes vacant. They moaned, mouths hanging open. Zombies. But just as I expected, they were incredibly slow. They looked like they could do little more than bite. The family channel was on fire. "This is too easy! These things are slow as turtles!" "One-shot headshots!"

Hayley's guess was completely right. As soon as they reached the transfer hall at the top of the stairs, they could sense dark shapes moving along the western corridor. Through countless battles between humans and zombies, several key zombie behaviors had become clear. Zombies mainly hunted humans through smell and sound. Callie, scared out of her wits, immediately grabbed Dan beside her and shoved him toward the lunging zombie.
