Selene was out there. Facing him. "Victor." I grabbed for his hand between waves, my voice barely holding together. "My mother's out there. I can feel her." "I know. Michael radioed it in a minute ago. She walked straight toward him the second the shield cracked." "Why would she do that?" "Because she's the one person on this battlefield he's never been able to walk away from, and she knows it." His jaw was tight, torn between the fight outside and the fight happening right in front of him. "She's using herself as a distraction, Arielle. On purpose." "That's insane. That's actually insane, even for this family." "I believe the exact phrase Gideon used over the radio was 'your mother's gone and done something reckless and terrifying,' so you're not wron
Victor's POV Gideon shouted first, and by the time I turned toward the yard, Michael was already down. Then, out of nowhere, an Architect fighter came out of the woods at an angle I thought we'd already cleared and that none of us had expected, fell on Michael, and he hit the ground so hard I felt it inside the cabin. He wasn't getting back up soon enough. Only a minute ago, the outside combat had seemed all but over, scattered remnants and nothing more. This had been the error. Whoever had masterminded the attack had held one final card on the board, with the patience enough to wait until we had let our guard down. "Michael!" I couldn't reach him. Another contraction hit Arielle with a scream from behind me and I was caught for a terrible second frozen between the two most important people I couldn't lose in a single breath. Sarah moved before I could decide. I had never seen her fight before, not like this, not really. She crossed the yard faster than anything with a pulse
Victor's POV The door swung open on an Architect scout, and I had him against the wall before he got a single sound out. "Where's Augustin?" I demanded. He laughed instead of answering, and behind him, through the open doorway, I counted at least six more shapes closing in fast through the trees. "Not here yet," the scout managed. "But he knows exactly where you are. He's known for hours." I broke his jaw before he could say anything else worth using against us, and shoved his unconscious weight back out into the yard as the first of the others reached the porch. "Victor!" Arielle's voice cracked behind me, another contraction dragging a sound out of her she couldn't fully hold back this time. "I've got the door. Don't you dare stop breathing on my account." I had to fight in the doorway itself, leaning on the narrow frame to stop them from rushing around me, all my instincts begging me not to take my eyes off that room for a second. I don't remember how many I knocked down,
Arielle's POV Victor moved us to the cabin three weeks before anyone expected labor to start, arguing that a smaller, harder-to-find location gave us better odds than staying inside a compound everyone already knew the location of. "Three weeks early," Clara had warned, checking me over one last time before we left. "If anything feels wrong, anything at all, you get me on the radio immediately. No waiting to see if it passes." "I promise." "I mean it, Arielle." "I know you do. I promise." The cabin was so quiet in the way that Bloodclaw would never quite manage, nestled well into the trees as it was, even the wind out here sounded different, softer, as if it hadn't yet heard that the rest of the world was crashing down. Michael wanted to allow us to take a full guard detail along. Victor turned down every single one, saying that a squad of wolves trudging through the woods would make noise louder than any radio transmission. "You're being stubborn," I'd told him, halfway throu
Arielle's POV Victor had tried to talk me into bed an hour earlier, and I'd sent him off with a kiss and a promise I had no intention of keeping. "Fifteen minutes," I told him. "I just need air." "You said that forty minutes ago." "Did I? Time's been acting strange lately. Very unreliable. Go check on your father, Victor. I'll be right behind you." He'd given me a look that said he didn't believe a word of it, but he'd gone anyway, trusting me enough not to argue, which was somehow worse than if he had. Selene found me on the porch that night, watching the tree line like it might tell me something the council hadn't already. "Can't sleep either," she said. "There's a countdown running in my head now. Days, maybe less. I don't think I'm sleeping again until this is over." She sat beside me without being asked, quiet for a long moment, her eyes fixed on the same dark tree line I'd been watching. "I need to tell you something," she said finally. "About Augustin. About
Victor's POV Arielle had spent the morning in the training yard against my better judgment, insisting she needed to feel her own power respond on command instead of only in a panic. I'd watched her call up a spark of light between her palms twice, small and controlled, before she got frustrated and let it flare bright enough to singe the grass at her feet. "That wasn't supposed to happen." "No kidding." I stamped out the smoldering patch with my boot. "Remind me why we're doing this two days after your last dramatic power surge and not, say, two months from now." "Because two months from now might not exist, Victor, and I'd rather know what I'm capable of before I need it than find out in the middle of a crisis." She flexed her fingers, sparks still dancing faintly at the tips. "Also, that felt incredible. Terrifying, but incredible." "You say that like it's a selling point." "It's a little bit of a selling point." Michael's summons pulled us both inside before I could argue fu
Arielle’s POVThe iron gates groaned open as the car rolled up the long driveway, and the mansion came into view the same way it always did. It looked too large, too quiet, too full of things that didn’t move. Every topiary trimmed to the same perfect angle. Every window was gleaming. Nothing was
Arielle's POVWhen I woke up, Victor wasn't on the bed.I got up slowly, still feeling the ache in my lower abdomen from last night. I hadn't showered after, I still smelled like Victor’s strong cologne and sex.Memories from last night rushed through my head, fuck! I had to admit that Victor did t
Arielle's POVI sat up.“You'll assume the role of a patient and I'll be the doctor.""Sounds interesting." I smiled. "What illnesses can you treat?""You'll find out. Soon." His eyes stayed on mine. "Let's not rush things."I nodded."Good." He strode to the table and picked up a pen and paper."T
Arielle's POV"Can I spend the night, please?"His brows raised."I mean…my rent expired, my stuff is outside and I have nowhere to go. If you could just let me stay for a few days…or I'll be gone by tomorrow."He squinted and stared at me with a hard expression. Silence followed. The rain was stil
