“You know each other?” Jordan asked as fast as lightning. This was not going as planned. “Hi, Amanda,” Zoey said, her voice sounding more like a broken record now than it did before. “Yeah, we went to college together,” Amanda said, trailing off slightly as the memories flashed before her. “And you didn't think to tell me?” Jordan asked, turning to Zoey in annoyance. “Hope everyone's welcome to the reunion?” Ray chipped in as he glided through the water on his back. “Shut up, Ray!” Amanda and Jordan thundered at the same time. It was clearly going to be an awkward moment for everyone, so Zoey decided she was going home. She walked over to Amanda first because she had to clear the air between them. At least, she felt she needed to. “Congrats on the wedding,” she told her. Amanda only nodded in response and let out a curt “Thanks.” The memory stuck no matter how hard they both tried to brush it aside, and Amanda remembered things slightly differently from her friend. She had not simply been on the verge of losing her ex-boyfriend when Zoey decided she was no longer going to be a part of her life. Her father's company had been on the brink of bankruptcy, and she had debated dropping out. It was on a Saturday night after a party that Amanda had quietly slipped into the bathroom and left several unanswered voicemails for Zoey before slitting her wrist. The homeowners had been quick to find her, and she was rushed to the hospital before she could bleed to death. “You never called back,” Amanda said, breaking the silence that Zoey was too scared to break. Jordan saw through the heat. He saw Zoey shudder underneath the blanket she had covered herself with. He knew it wasn't from the cold. “Zoey, did you do that thing I asked?” Zoey was dumbstruck for a minute. Then she mouthed an “Ooh” when she finally recognised that he had only asked that to save her bum. “On it,” she said as she packed her clothes by the pool and made a graceless saunter back to the guest room. • Zoey got up early the next morning with the intent to leave. A gentle knock sounded on her door just as she was reaching for its handle. She thought it would be Jordan. She hoped it would be, so she could explain to him that she had only become aware of the situation when it was already too late, just in case he wanted to close the deal. Instead, she opened the door, and Amanda's bright smile greeted her ice-pale face. “I wanted to speak to you,” she said to Zoey as she crossed into the room. Zoey didn't know what to say, so she kept quiet and waited for Amanda to say whatever it was that had been on her mind. “Look, maybe we didn't end on the best of terms,” Amanda started. “But the past is in the past, and I'm willing to let bygones be bygones.” Zoey was speechless. She had been throughout the unexpected reunion, and now she was even more frightened. There she stood, face to face with an old friend offering forgiveness who didn't think the person she was offering it to was about to ruin her life. “I want you to come to the wedding.” Zoey didn't realise she had let out a cynical laugh until she heard it echo through the room. “I'm sorry, I'm just really excited about all of this. I didn't expect to meet you here… at all,” she said. “Yeah, same, actually,” Amanda smiled, rolling her eyes at the absurdity of chance. How clueless she was. “You know, for a second there, I actually thought you were planning on stealing my fiancé, but that's stupid. Silly me.” Zoey let out a very loud and clumsy laugh at the oddly accurate conclusion. “Of course, if that were ever to happen, you know what I'd do to you, right? I'd f*cking carve your eyeballs out and watch you bleed to death as I make love to him right in front of you.” Again, Zoey was speechless, and damn near traumatised by the image. “Yeah, definitely not what's happening. You can count on that,” she lied and gulped. “Good.” “If you'll excuse me, I actually have to leave now, but… I'll be in touch.” Before Zoey knew it, Amanda had launched herself into her arms and given her the scariest embrace she had ever received. Then she left the room as soon as she could, only to bump right into Jordan on her way down the stairs. “Well, good thing I found you,” Jordan said and took her by the hand as he forcefully dragged her into a secluded space. “Stop it.” “What the hell, Zoey?” he asked, breathless as he pushed her back into a corner. His body was so close to hers that she couldn't escape even if she tried. “This wasn't part of the plan.” “No kidding. You didn't tell me you were getting married to my college best friend.” “How was I supposed to know?” he whispered, trying his best not to let his frustration break through the tempo of his voice. “No, how was I supposed to know? You brought me here, remember?” “What're you guys doing?” a voice asked behind them.“Zoey?” Amanda said, shocked to see the person who had decided to ghost her three years ago.“You know each other?” Jordan asked as fast as lightning. This was not going as planned.“Hi, Amanda,” Zoey said, her voice sounding more like a broken record now than it did before.“Yeah, we went to college together,” Amanda said, trailing off slightly as the memories flashed before her.“And you didn't think to tell me?” Jordan asked, turning to Zoey in annoyance.“Hope everyone's welcome to the reunion?” Ray chipped in as he glided through the water on his back.“Shut up, Ray!” Amanda and Jordan thundered at the same time.It was clearly going to be an awkward moment for everyone, so Zoey decided she was going home. Zoey excused herself to go to the bathroom and locked herself in it for close to thirty minutes. She called Zach in the middle of the panic attack she was having. Of course, Zach was always her go-to confidant in times of distress because he always knew what to tell her, even if it was a lie.And now, she needed that convincing lie more than ever.“The bride is Amanda,” she told him, almost tearing up.“Who's Amanda?” Zach was lost and didn't really pay attention to Zoey since he was getting tipsy at a friend's place. She wanted to reach into the phone and claw his eyes out in frustration. Didn't he know how serious this was?Well, no, he doesn't because he isn't the one who had made the stupid decision to ruin a potentially great marriage, Zoey! she thought.“If you don't listen to me, I am going to kill myself right now,” she threatened him.“Well, sheesh, don't do that,” he objected.“Come on, you know Amanda. We went to CAL-U together. I told you about that time she said she was g
Zoey felt the wind ruffle her sandy hair as she slightly leaned her head out of the window of Jordan's car. That was the last thing she felt before she let her eyes grow heavy. When she woke up, the sun was setting, and Jordan still had his arms stretched out, firmly gripping the steering wheel. He knew when she fell asleep. In fact, he had watched her sleep and heard her gentle snores. What he hadn't noticed was when her eyes fluttered open and fixed themselves on him.She saw the tattoo just below his right bicep. She wondered if it was supposed to be a rose tied to a sword or a rose wounded by a sword. His brown hair was gently ruffled by the breeze blowing through his window, and his deep brown eyes remained focused on the road.“Am I getting kidnapped right now?” she finally asked after they took a turn and headed towards a beach house. He looked over at her with a raised brow and let out a small laugh. It was the first time he had actually acknowledged her humour. “It's kind of
“Girl, he did not!” Zach exclaimed over the call as Zoey pedalled her way to town that morning.“He did. I still cannot fathom what is happening to me right now,” she admitted, because to her, the encounter was nothing short of unbelievable.“But are you sure it was Jordan? I mean, THE JORDAN FISCHER?”Of course, anyone would have doubted her and believed she was crazy. The lead singer had hundreds of sold-out concerts, millions of fans, and a net worth of over a billion dollars to his name. How could he have needed one person out of eight billion people, and she was the one he found? She was a nobody. She had convinced herself of that since elementary school. She had even gotten used to being called the fat kid at recess.Zach Delaney had not come along until junior high. They met during prom night, after Zoey had been humiliated to see her date kiss another girl. Zach had extended his hand to her as she cried in the parking lot while his own boyfriend waited patiently in a rented ca
“YOU’RE JORDAN FISCHER!!”He sat down across from her, unbothered, with only a slight scowl of annoyance plastered across his God-awfully handsome face.“I wouldn’t have guessed it,” he responded dryly to her eagerness. “Look, let’s just cut to the chase, and you can have my autograph later.”Zoey was dying internally. She still had not fully grasped that the man she had worshipped since she was fourteen was actually sitting in front of her.“I-I… I don’t know what to say. I’m sorry,” she said with an awkward laugh.“Then perhaps you should just let me do the talking,” he said, unfazed and bored. To him, she was just another starstruck fan. Thank God he had chosen this venue. He practically owned the reserve, and he was certain the media had been banned from the premises. He couldn’t handle another scandal, and if all went according to plan, his current fiancée would be out of his life in a short space of time.“But I don’t understand—whose wedding are you paying me to crash? Am I cra
Saturdays were reserved for walking Suzanne’s Labrador, and Zoey had memorized the dog’s favourite routes like the back of her hand. First came a stop at Craig’s Confectioneries, where Miss Pebbles insisted on getting a bite of the sweet cakes he usually sold her, sometimes for free. Then came a trip to the park, where Zoey would watch her employer’s overjoyed pet trot around with its tail wagging furiously. She had spent months searching for side jobs because being a barrister barely earned her enough to cover her meals and electricity bills. Lately, however, her landlord had been complaining about her delayed rent payments and seemed increasingly eager to have her out. He hadn’t explicitly threatened to evict her, but Zoey had a feeling it was only a matter of time. The walk back to Suzanne’s expensive condo was short. Zoey prepared Miss Pebbles’ food and set it aside for later, then decided her shift was officially over at noon. She unchained her bicycle from the railings and p
