Chapter 1

Chapter 1

The dinner table had always been my father's battlefield.

Every conversation, every silence, every clink of a crystal glass — it was all calculated. Measured. My father, Richard Sinclair, did nothing without purpose. I had learned that lesson young, back when I was seven years old and watched him smile at a man across this very table, only to have that same man disappear three days later.

I never asked what happened to him.

Some questions, in this house, were better left unasked.

Tonight felt different though. The air was thicker somehow, pressing against my skin like a warning I couldn't quite read. The candles flickered even though the windows were shut. Maria, our housekeeper of fifteen years, had served the soup without meeting my eyes. Even the house itself seemed to be holding its breath.

I stabbed at my food, pretending I hadn't noticed any of it.

"You look tense," my father said from the head of the table, his voice smooth as polished marble.

"I'm fine." I kept my eyes on my plate.

"Aria." The way he said my name made me look up. That single word — quiet, deliberate — carried the weight of everything he wasn't saying yet. His grey eyes studied me the way they studied contracts. Looking for weaknesses. Calculating worth.

I set my fork down slowly. "What did you do?"

The corner of his mouth lifted. Not quite a smile. Never quite a smile with him. "Always so perceptive. Your mother was the same way."

He only ever mentioned my mother when he wanted to disarm me. I refused to let it work.

"Dad." My voice was steady even though my pulse wasn't. "What. Did. You. Do."

He reached for his wine glass, swirled it once, and took a long sip before answering. As if my entire world wasn't sitting on the edge of whatever words were about to come out of his mouth.

"I've made arrangements," he said finally. "For your future."

"What kind of arrangements?"

"The kind that will secure this family's position for the next generation." He set his glass down with a soft click. "You're going to be married, Aria."

The word landed like a stone dropped into still water. Married. I waited for the ripples to stop, for my brain to catch up, for him to tell me he was joking. He didn't.

"Married," I repeated. My voice sounded strange to my own ears. Far away. "To who?"

My father's gaze didn't waver. "Dante Vitale."

The name hit me like ice water to the face.

Dante Vitale.

Even I knew that name. Everyone knew that name. You didn't grow up in this city without hearing it whispered in certain circles, spoken with a specific mixture of reverence and terror. The Vitale family had their hands in everything — real estate, finance, politics. That was the polished surface, the version that appeared in Forbes and at charity galas.

Underneath it was something else entirely.

Something dark. Something that didn't ask permission and didn't leave witnesses.

"You can't be serious." I pushed back from the table and stood up. My chair scraped against the marble floor, the sound cutting through the silence like a blade. "He's — Dad, do you even know what he is? What his family is?"

"I know exactly what they are." My father's voice remained perfectly calm. Infuriatingly calm. "That's precisely why this arrangement makes sense."

"It doesn't make sense!" The words tore out of me before I could stop them. "It's insane! I'm twenty-three years old, I have a life, I have plans — you can't just sell me off to some — some criminal like I'm a business transaction!"

"Sit down, Aria."

"No." I planted my feet. My hands were shaking but my voice wasn't. I'd learned that much from him at least — never let them see the trembling. "I won't sit down and I won't marry Dante Vitale. You can find another way to fix whatever mess you've gotten yourself into."

Something shifted in my father's expression then. Just for a fraction of a second — a crack in that smooth, controlled surface. And what I saw underneath it stopped my breath cold.

Fear.

My father was afraid.

Richard Sinclair, the man who had never flinched at anything in his entire life, was sitting at the head of his dinner table with fear living quietly behind his eyes.

I sank back into my chair slowly.

"How bad is it?" I asked. My voice was barely above a whisper now.

He was quiet for a long moment. Outside, the city hummed its usual indifferent song. Cars. Distant sirens. The world carrying on as if mine wasn't crumbling.

"The Vitale family extended a debt to me four years ago," he said finally. "A significant one. I have been unable to repay it."

"How much?"

"Enough that money is no longer a sufficient substitute."

My stomach turned. "And Dante Vitale decided a wife was an acceptable alternative?"

"He proposed the arrangement himself." My father looked at me then, really looked at me, and for a moment I saw something almost like regret flicker across his face. "I tried to negotiate other terms, Aria. For months I tried."

"Not hard enough, clearly."

He didn't argue. That silence was its own kind of answer.

I stared at the candle flame nearest to me, watching it bend and sway. My whole life I had watched my father maneuver through impossible situations with cold precision. He had built an empire on the back of his ruthlessness. And now, because of one debt, one entanglement with the wrong family, he had run out of moves.

And I was the last card he had left to play.

"When?" I asked.

"The engagement will be announced at the end of the month. The wedding—" he paused. "The wedding is in six weeks."

Six weeks. Six weeks to become the wife of the most dangerous man in the city.

I stood up again, this time quietly. Calmly. I picked up my napkin, folded it carefully, and set it beside my plate the way I had been taught since childhood. Composure above all else. Appearance above everything.

"I want you to know," I said, looking down at my father with all the steadiness I could gather, "that I will never forgive you for this."

He held my gaze. "I know."

I turned and walked out of the dining room, keeping my back straight and my steps measured all the way to the staircase. I climbed every step without rushing. I closed my bedroom door without slamming it.

And then I sat on the edge of my bed in the dark, and I let myself feel the full weight of what had just happened.

Dante Vitale.

I had six weeks before I became his.

I pressed my hands flat against my knees and made myself a quiet, unbreakable promise in the darkness of my room.

He could have my name. He could have my presence at his table and my face at his side at whatever ruthless gatherings his world demanded.

But that was all he would ever get from me.

Dante Vitale had no idea what he had just agreed to take on.
