Emi: All I wanted was for Jack to realize how much I loved him. I spent years hoping he would come around and finally stop hating me. Jack: Remi has always had my heart but she has always preferred my brother. I’d rather be hateful and mean than to show her how much she hurts me. Emi and Jack spent years wanting each other but miscommunication and assumptions caused them to drift apart until Emi moves back to town nine years after leaving for college.

Chapter One
Author’s POV 20 years ago “Mom, who is that next door?” Jack asked his mother. He was watching through the living room window. He saw a girl hopping around outside while grownups carried items into the house. “Those are our new neighbors, sweetie, and it looks like they have a little girl your age.” Jack looked back outside, trying to figure out it would be ok to say hi to her. “Can I go play with her?” “You should ask her?” Jack’s mom guided him to the front door and gave him a little push, hoping to encourage him. Jack was the quiet one out of her two children, and she was always worried about him being outshined by Tyson. Tyson was never afraid to do things or to make friends. Jack was quiet and got angry easily when he felt overwhelmed. He didn’t do well with being social and he would rather be in his room reading or playing a game alone, so it made her smile to see him willingly approach another child. Jack slowly approached the little girl and stared at her. The girl loo

Chapter Two
Emi It’s been almost ten years since I’ve lived in this town permanently. I moved back to spend time with my father, and the local high school I graduated from had a teaching position open in my field, so I applied and came back home. Today is my first day on the job, and it is teacher in-service. It’s a day of getting to know each other and getting updates about the upcoming year. It’s my least favorite day of the year especially when I'm new. “Now on to my favorite part of all this, introducing new staff.” Ms. Smith is the school principal, and while she seems better than the one, I had when I was here, she is still a little too optimistic for me. “When I call your name, come up here and tell us your full name, where you grew up, and where you just came from.” Unfortunately, she went in alphabetical order, which gave me the number two spot for introducing myself. “Hi, everyone. As you already know, my name is...” As I was looking through the teaching staff, my eyes caught the o

Chapter Three
JackRemington Bay is back in town. I thought I had moved on with my life; I thought she had moved on and was living life back east. Watching her introduce herself made me realize I missed her and watching Micah flirt with her at lunch made me angry. I didn't want her to know I was engaged; I didn't want her to feel like I was taken, even though I am, which is pretty shitty of me, I know, but I want there to be a chance that we could be together. I had promised Lauren a coffee and donuts when I came home, and I wasn't expecting to see Remi sitting there in the cafe with my brother and some random guy. I always hated that she preferred Tyson over me. I still hate how close they are. When I first saw her when we were six years old, I was smitten for the lack of a better word. I’ve always had a pull toward her and I’ve always wanted to be with her. As we got old my anger towards her relationship with my brother got unbearable and snapped at her a lot. “Hey man, come join us,” Tyson s

Emi “This is a cute place, Emi.” “Thanks. Dad kept telling me it was too small.” “Nope, it's just right for you.” Alyssa has always understood me; she never tries to talk me out of something, which could either be good or bad. I bought many things that I didn’t need because she encouraged me. “So, you and Jake?” “Yup, it just started, so don't ask me what's going on because I don't know.” It didn't surprise me when I found out Alyssa and Jake were dating, they always got along, and we're always flirting. They both thought I would have an issue with it because of the history that Jake and I have, but I really couldn’t care less. If they’re happy, I’m good. “Knock, knock; we have food and beer.” “It's about time I'm starving, and it's Chinese! You're the best, Tyson.” Alyssa didn't wait for anyone before she started digging in; I always loved how comfortable she was with herself and didn't care about gaining or losing weight. “How does it feel to be back?” Tyson ask

Chapter Five
Jack When we got into the teacher's lounge, I had Remi sit on the couch while I got a zip lock bag and filled it with ice. I walked back over to Remi and bent down, so I was level with her face, and I can’t remember the last time we were this close. I looked her in the eyes and realized that all I had to do was slightly lean in and my lips would be on hers. Would she let me kiss her? I shouldn’t be thinking about kissing her, I’m in a relationship and it’s wrong to think about another woman like this. “He got you good; you'll probably have a black eye. How are you feeling?” “My head hurts, and my stomach is upset.” “I think that's just from the shock; I don't think he hit you hard enough to give you a concussion, but if you start to feel worse, let me know.” I placed the ice on her eye, and she winced. “I’m sorry. It'll probably be sore for a few days.” “Thanks.” “I also want to say I'm sorry for snapping at you during lunch...Things aren't going too well with Laur

Emi “The good news is that there is nothing structurally wrong with your eye. The bad news is that it will probably look worse tomorrow. Is it causing you any pain?” “Nothing I can’t ignore.” “Good, I’m going to prescribe you some eye drops that’ll number you for a bit if it gets too bad. The swelling should continue to go down, but ice it for a few minutes every couple of hours.” “Thank you.” I am happy the doctor confirmed that there was no damage to my eye. It was embarrassing enough to get punched. Since I have the day off, I promised my dad I would see him and Jane for a while. Jane is Jake’s mom and my stepmother. When they first started dating, I was upset because of the history Jake and I have, but I quickly saw how happy she made my dad and got over it because he deserves to be happy after everything that he has been through. The good thing about being out while everyone is working is the lack of traffic, so I made it to my dad’s house quickly. The house I grew

Jack I waited for Remi to leave before I addressed Lauren. I didn’t want to make Remi more uncomfortable. “What the hell was that?” “I was just stating the truth; she’s the reason you’ve been distant these last few days, right?” “No.” It was the truth; I’ve been slowly distancing myself from her for multiple reasons, and the number one reason is, that I don’t want to marry her, but Lauren and her father have done a lot for me, and I feel like I’m obligated to go through with it. It isn’t fair to her; I’ve led her on and she built a life around me. “You’re lying. You’re a coward because you won’t admit it.” “Fine, you want the truth?” I yelled. “I don’t want to get married.” Before I started talking again, I took a moment to calm myself. “I thought the engagement would solidify our relationship, that all we needed was something exciting to mix things up, but I was wrong. I think I’ve been over this relationship for a while, and I just didn’t want to hurt you.” “Well, it doe

Chapter Eight
Emi When Jack left, I called Alyssa, but she didn't answer, so I called Jake and asked him to have a late dinner with me. I didn't get to eat much of my food earlier because of the argument Jack and Lauren were having and I was starving. I was relieved when Jake said he was free and would even pick me up. “What the fuck happened to your face?” “I tried to break up a fight at work and got punched; I would prefer not to talk about my eye. I have other things to tell you.” “Fair enough. Where do you want to go?” “Any place open that has food and beer.” “I know just the place.” It didn’t take me long to realize he was taking us to Pat’s Bar and Grill. It’s his favorite place to eat and never misses an opportunity to eat there. As soon as I walked in, I saw Tyson and Jack sitting at a corner table, and I didn’t want to sit anywhere near Jack while I had this conversation with Jake. “Let’s sit over here.” I quickly pulled him over to a table near the door. “Ok, start spilling befo

EmiAfter the rose and note, Jack didn’t reach back out; I didn’t even see him in the teacher’s lounge, and its been close to two weeks. I still see him in between classes as we monitor the hall, but that’s the only time.It felt awkward, but I was thankful he was giving me space. He needed to figure his relationship with Lauren before anything happened between us.“It’s about time you showed up!”Alyssa yelled as I joined them. I quickly glanced around the table and noticed Jack was there with Tyson. They barely hung out together, so I wasn’t expecting him to join us tonight, but I like seeing them together. I took a seat next to Alyssa. “I didn’t know he was going to be here. Tyson didn’t tell me he invited him.”“It’s okay. It’s nice to see them getting along for once. I think they’re trying to mend things.”“I think it helps that Jack knows that you’re not into Tyson.”“Let’s not talk about this.”I like to avoid things. I know it’s not healthy but it’s easier than dealin

Chapter Ten
JackI was hoping to surprise Remi by showing up early and didn’t consider that she may have been feeling sick from the alcohol she had last night. I look like a douche, and I can’t blame her for being annoyed.I was hoping the food would help my cause by making her feel better, and it seemed to have worked.“Can I have five more minutes so I can straighten my hair?”“I think it looks good, but if you want to straighten it, I can wait.”I honestly thought she was beautiful; she always has been. I remember the first time I saw her when we were six. I told mom Remi was beautiful and that I hated Tyson for taking her away from me. He stole her attention from me that day, or at least I thought he did. I can’t believe it turned into twenty years of bickering and jealousy.“All done. So where are we going?”“I’ll give you two hints. You used to love it when you were younger, and it was the first time you saw me punch Ty in the face.”She let out a gasp, followed by laughter.“The ar
