Chapter 1

1. Maura

The lace of my wedding veil felt less like silk and more like a shroud. It scratched against my cheek, heavy and suffocating, mirroring the weight pressing down on my chest. I stood before the altar of St. Jude’s Cathedral, my hands clasped so tightly that my knuckles turned white. The air smelled of stale incense and the expensive, cloying cologne of the man waiting for me at the end of the aisle.

Count Valerius.

He was seventy years old, with breath that smelled of rotting teeth and eyes that roamed over my body like a butcher inspecting a cut of meat. My father had sold me to him for fifty thousand gold coins—enough to clear his gambling debts and buy himself another year of miserable freedom. I wasn’t a bride. I was currency.

"Smile, Elara," my father hissed from beside me, his grip on my arm bruising. "Don’t look so miserable. You should be grateful. A Countess? It’s more than you deserve."

I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. If I opened my mouth, I would scream. So I stared at the stained-glass window above, watching the dust motes dance in the light, trying to detach my soul from my body. Just get it over with, I told myself. Say the vows, become his property, and die inside.

The organ music swelled, a mournful dirge that matched my heartbeat. The heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral creaked open. But it wasn’t the groom walking down the aisle.

The sound that followed wasn’t music. It was the sharp, metallic click of a rifle being cocked. Then another. And another. A hush fell over the congregation, thick and sudden. Boots echoed against the marble floor. Heavy, rhythmic, terrifying.

I turned my head, my heart skipping a beat. Standing in the doorway, framed by the blinding afternoon sun, was a figure clad in black military attire. A long coat brushed against his calves, and a sword hung at his hip, its hilt gleaming with cold malice.

Kaelen von Hohenheim. The Duke of Iron. The Empire’s Butcher. My stepbrother.

He didn’t look like a man attending a wedding. He looked like death incarnate. His dark hair was swept back, revealing a face carved from granite—sharp jawline, high cheekbones, and eyes so black they seemed to swallow the light around them.

My father gasped, stepping forward. "Duke Kaelen? What is the meaning of this intrusion?"

Kaelen didn’t speak. He didn’t even look at my father. His gaze locked onto me. It was a physical blow. That stare stripped me bare, ignoring the layers of lace and satin, seeing straight into the trembling core of my soul. It was possessive. Predatory. Hungry.

"Step aside," Kaelen said. His voice was low, a velvet rumble that vibrated through the floorboards and straight into my bones.

"This is a private ceremony!" Count Valerius squeaked, though he took a shaky step back. "You have no right—"

Kaelen moved. It happened so fast I barely registered it. One moment he was at the door; the next, he was halfway down the aisle. He drew his sword in a single, fluid motion. The steel sang as it cut through the air.

Slash.

Count Valerius’s head tilted at an unnatural angle. A fountain of crimson erupted from his neck, spraying across the front row of pews. Screams shattered the silence. Chaos erupted. Guests scrambled for the exits, tripping over their own robes in a panic.

I stood frozen, my brain unable to process the horror. Warm droplets landed on my cheek. I touched them, staring at the red stain on my gloved finger. Blood.

Kaelen stepped over the Count’s twitching body as if it were nothing more than a discarded rug. He walked up the steps to the altar, his boots leaving bloody prints on the white carpet. My father tried to run, but Kaelen’s lieutenant blocked his path with a pistol.

Now, it was just me and him.

Kaelen stopped inches from me. He was tall, looming over me like a storm cloud. The scent of iron and gunpowder mixed with his signature sandalwood fragrance, creating a dizzying cocktail of danger. He reached out, his leather-gloved hand catching my chin. His touch was cold, but his eyes burned with a feverish intensity.

"Elara," he said, my name rolling off his tongue like a prayer and a curse all at once.

"Why..." My voice cracked, barely a whisper. "Why did you do this?"

He leaned in, his lips brushing against my ear. I could feel the heat radiating from his body, contrasting sharply with the chill of his glove. "Because you are mine," he whispered, his voice rough with a dark emotion I couldn’t name. "And I do not share what belongs to me."

Before I could protest, he scooped me up into his arms. My veil tore, fluttering to the ground like a dead butterfly. As he carried me out of the church, past the bodies and the screams, I realized with dawning horror that I hadn’t been saved. I had just been claimed.
