MasukCONNOR
I had been sitting in front of the television for the past thirty minutes, staring blankly at a show I had no interest whatsoever in.
Lola was lying cozily under a blanket beside me, breathing peacefully as she slept, like nothing else in the entire world mattered.
I wasn't sure why she was sleeping out there, but after I got a refill of my bottle from the kitchen, I couldn't leave her be.
The sitting room was silent except for the small other noises that were truly unavoidable, from the endless ticking of the wall clock, the whooshing of the humidifier and the giant heater I had thought to put on because the weather seemed pretty cold, the running of the fridge and Lola's slow snore.
For a moment, I had stared squarely into her face for a clue, as I hoped it wasn't because of the work out incident from the previous day.
But Lola was sleeping too peacefully, it almost felt like I was getting a brutal response to not overthink things.
A couple of times, she had turned in her position to adjust well, and each time, I thought she would wake up. She never did.
That was why when she turned again, the sofa creaking loudly under her weight, I just forced my focus to stay on the television in front of me, instead of glancing back again to look at her.
As soon as I noticed her body relax back into the couch, my gaze flew back to her, my breathing stopping for a second.
Our eyes were matched together and she was staring at me with every question she had unspoken, yet loud, waiting for a reply.
Slowly, I inhaled deeply, then exhaled generously, letting go of how much tension I felt in that moment.
Breaking away from her gaze, I returned to face the television, but it was pointless.
I had to say something sooner or later, and it had to make sense.
I sighed, regretting that I did.
Then, I stood up, straightening my perfectly fine shorts and flattening out my t-shirt, my water bottle - filled, standing on the table in front of me.
I thought about it - what it was and how they were, it just wasn't adding up.
Slowly, I sank back into the couch I had stood from, my brain working for the best words to start with.
I glanced at her again.
She was sitting now, the blanket hanging off her shoulders. Her eyes seemed tired, confused, curious, scared maybe, all in a cold expression that stretched across her face.
What did I think?
That I was just going to watch her wake up, then she'd thank me for staying with her and then, head back upstairs to freshen up.
I never really thought about ---
"Where am I?" the question rolled off her tongue like it had been sitting there for ages.
"You were passed out on the couch when I got here," I added quickly.
I watched her eyes do this thing where it flutters repeatedly in obvious curiosity.
I wanted to say something else.
I thought it should say something.
"Are you hungry?" I asked again, desperate to break through the ice of awkwardness that was starting to build around us.
My attention returned to her face and remained there, my mind thinking through the list of possibilities for whatever could be going on in her mind now.
She looked like she was going to say something, but decided against it last minute, her expression flattening out immediately and completely.
Like a roughed edged dagger, the persistent silence between us tore through my chest as the seconds rolled by.
I wanted to close my eyes, open them again to see that this moment never happened.
I wasn't sure why my brain was overreacting, but those moments of her came back - the first time I met her and how stunningly beautiful she looked and how my heart ached a little that she was Eddy's wife which meant out of bounds, how I fought myself intentionally to not gawk at her the entire night at the Hargrove Foundation Gala, how I had frozen in unbelief when I saw her at the door of my exercise room, then the dining scene - my heart shattered in regrets.
The guilt I had managed to hold down for the past fifteen hours with the excuse that there was already bad blood between Eddy and me as a result of the exercise room incident tugged at my chest until the soft cotton on the couch repulsed against my skin.
I stood up.
She didn't move. She didn't even look up.
The strangest thing to do, but I paced about the space in front of me for a while, forcing my head to work out something, the sound from the television suddenly becoming too loud, it bursted into my thoughts.
"Come eat something," my mouth spoke at the same time my mind formed that I had seen food in the freezer earlier.
Like my words were venom thrown at her, she turned sharply to look at me, her body almost bouncing off the couch.
I trembled, reaching out involuntarily to assist her, but withdrawing immediately after her sharp rebuff stare.
"I don't mean no harm," I raised my hands in a harmless surrender.
Her face relaxed, then her entire body did the same. I noticed the comfort return to her eyes, and somehow a small smile formed against my lips.
Quickly, I straightened my face before she could notice anything.
My face might not have shown it, but in that moment, I was the happiest I had ever been in weeks of endless work at the office and the struggle of having to tolerate my best friend because it was that time of the year again when he turns into a thorn in my flesh for no justifiable reason.
I could watch this woman in front of me forever.
Her skin was smooth and dazzled under the low lights of the sitting room — it reminded me of a line from my favorite song.
Whose face looked perfect for the cover of a fashion magazine when they had just woken up?
Her energy was flat — the type of flat that was quiet but slowly intoxicating, the type that draws you completely in before you even realize.
Eddy's voice returned to my head — whispers at first, then slowly echoing against my skull.
For one stupid second, I imagined he was serious about wanting me to have his wife and that I could make a deal out of it with him.
I pressed the sole of my feet against the floor until the hard concrete crashed on my bones.
At that moment, I couldn't trust myself to look away or to keep still if I didn't look away.
I wasn't sure but I could sense that I had moved a step towards her.
Then, I heard her clear her throat — a warning, an apology, a request, a reminder...my mind processed a thousand emotions.
Then, she spoke, her words immersing right through the emotions that had built up in my stomach and staying trapped within them like water on a sponge.
"Can you fall in love with me? For the rest of the seven days?”
FREDDYI rolled my eyes at the plate of snacks in front of me, sighing at how messy my relationship with my family had become, but having no regrets whatsoever concerning my decision."Everything is wrong here," I muttered, grabbing my glass of water and pouring every single drop down my throat. My father grunted beside me, and Eddy made a tired sound, letting his cutlery slip through his fingers to the plate noisily.I swallowed, pushing the words I had to say back down my throat. My eyes wandered over to where Lola sat, unsettled as usual, her face void of any real emotion. It was almost like she was checking her breathing too, careful not to sniff in the wrong direction.Letting my guards down, I allowed my gaze linger longer on her face, and for some reason, I couldn't help but notice how much of the wrong piece she appeared as on the table — not because I think she wasn't family which was sad enough giving that it had to be Eddy, but because her demeanor made her appear so in eve
CONNORWhen the door bell rang, I knew it was Lola.I texted her as soon as Eddy left my office yesterday, and she begged me to allow her to come see me today. We agreed on 9:00AM.As I walked to get the door, I glanced at my wristwatch and the time was 8:48AM.I hesitated for a second before opening the door, because I wasn't sure how to face her for an offence we both knew I was guilty of too.Nevertheless, I clicked the door open. Standing before me was a woman, obviously sad and confused, her face long and puffy from probably crying long hours. Not knowing what to say first, I just moved out of the way to allow her inside.Lola walked straight up to a couch and let herself sink in, then she buried her face in her palms, her hair falling all over her arms, depicting a perfect image of a woman who doesn't know what becomes of her.Inhaling slowly, I exhaled loudly."Did you tell Eddy where you were going?"She didn't answer. I let her be. Walking over to the couch opposite where s
CONNORI had just finished doing the ward rounds for the morning and had sunk into my office chair, ready for my hot cup of tea, but suddenly, I didn't feel like taking anything anymore. The walls of my stomach felt stiff, leaving me wondering if I truly had to go to the restroom again barely two hours after the last time I went. But then, I was waiting for a call for one of my patients, and I had a spreadsheet to quickly inspect.Deciding on just water, I settled in to work on my computer. Not too long after, a quick knock broke against my door. Then, Claire came in with her hands hanging like they normally would when there was an emergency. There was this sense of urgency in her expression that made me almost grab my lab coat from the hanger in readiness to attend whatever medical emergency it could be."There's someone asking to see you," she dropped finally, causing me to sit back in my chair disappointedly."C'mon Claire. You're not new to this job. You know my schedule and you
LOLAStanding in line with the others, we waited for chef Clementine as he inspected our designs one after the other."It looks a bit too...I wouldn't say shabby. Maybe, you could concentrate more next time.""Uuuhm...I don't know, but something is definitely wrong with this.""Okay. Great job."I listened to his comments on the works before mine, and it made me wonder what exactly he would say to me.I had been out of it the entire time I designed, my cuttings weren't straight and my line works were just as messy. A part of my icing design was shaky, on the edge of falling.I knew very well why I had turned out like that, and he knew too, but he is probably going to brush it off.I held my breath when he approached mine.Adjusting his apron, he tilted his head to look at my own designed cake sitting pathetically in front of me.My fingers folded inwards beside me."Hmmm...what is your name again?" he asked, but it was very obvious he was putting up an act. He had asked me my name whi
LOLAMy stomach grumbled from not having anything to eat since last night.I wasn't too comfortable to eat from Connor's, and I was too anxious to eat before leaving the house.I thought about ordering a take out, but then, the consequences that would come from Eddy checking my order description and his demeaning words on my body size of two years made me lose my appetite."F*ck it!" I cussed against my breath, making a mental note to visit the closest bakery as soon as I could get a break from the classes."The chef is unusually late today," a blonde woman with a disturbingly heavy make-up sitting in front of me spoke, forcing me to check my own time only to find out that we had been sitting for over an hour waiting for the first lesson of the day.My stomach grumbled more and louder, forcing the skinny woman sitting beside me to give me a dead ass scrutinizing look."I'm sorry. I skipped breakfast," I muttered, staring apologetically in her direction. In response, she shook her head
LOLAAs Freddy began to walk away, I followed him, my chest pounding uncontrollably in my chest. We walked up the stairs until we were right on the second floor with my room a couple steps in front. He turned to face me. Despite the urge to fall on my knees and try to plead my way out of the terrible act of listening to his conversation with his father, I tried to maintain a straight expression.Without a single word, he stared me down like he too was finding it difficult to come up with a first word, or maybe, he was contemplating on how best to rebuke me.I couldn't stare him back in the eyes, maybe I would have been able to tell what his thoughts were.Exhaling sharply, he turned and began walking up the stairs.I thought about heading straight for my room, but instead, I followed him."Stop, Freddy. Maybe we could talk."He didn't reply, just kept going. He got to his room and let himself in, banging the door right in my face."Freddy! I am sorry for listening to your conversation
FREDDYI stretched hard against the softness of the sheets with my jet black duvet in a dump against my body like it was casually abandoned there. My eyes were still shut but I could feel the slight warmth of the morning sun against my face."Don't shut your eyes. Watch me."Immediately, my eyes sl
FREDDYI turned sharply to the door, my body cold with a feeling I couldn't admit as fear. But Lola had dived off my body, swift, like she had been waiting for this moment. Then, she was at the door, but she didn't open it.She locked it.I watched her turn the lock intentionally, twice, the sound
CONNOR"Was that necessary?" I straightened my posture, turning to look at Eddy, my body stiff from anger I could not fully express - partly because it might end up stripping bare my secret feelings, Eddy could read through lines, and then, because I still wanted to respect my friend whose house I
FREDMONI turned endlessly on my bed, regretting why I had made the decision to come back to my family.I hated them. I didn't need them. I was doing well in Europe. They appreciate my music. I had a comfortable life, and I slept well.I was this close to booking a flight for the next morning, but
