Hazel’s P.O.V.

“Everything done?” I asked Cody anxiously when he came back after, I guess, an hour. I was in the lobby with Mom. She was still sleeping. She was in so much pain when Cody gave her the medicine a few hours ago after taking the medicine from Naisha.

“Yeah. I have arranged a single room for her here. So, you can stay with her at any time if you want. They are bringing the stretcher. Then we will shift her safely.” He replied to me with a faint and relaxed smile.

“Oh, goddess!!!” I exclaimed aloud in relief, tightening my grip on my mother’s upper body as I was still holding her on my lap.

“Everything is okay, Hazel. You don’t need to be afraid of anyone here.” He comforted me, patting my shoulder lightly.

I put my hand on his hand on my shoulder and sniffed.

Finally, a safe place for my mother.

“I owe you for the lifetime, Cody. You don’t know how relieved I am now.” I voiced my gratitude towards him from the deepest part of my heart.

He didn’t reply immediately but sighed aloud. “We are now married, Hazel. Stop saying "thank you" and "sorry" in public, okay?” he reminded me in a hushed voice.

I sniffed and crinkled my nose while smacking my lips.

He helped me, and now it was my turn to help him. I was ready for that.

I slowly moved my face in his direction, still pressing my face on his hand.

“You don’t worry, honey. I will annoy you to the extent that you will cry blood for divorce.” I replied to him with a sinister smile.

He immediately raised his brows in surprise, and then we both laughed together after a short pause of a few seconds.

I sniffed while laughing. I didn’t know when the last time was that I laughed so relaxed, but it really felt good.

“Alpha.” We both stopped laughing when a nurse called him softly. I raised my brows in amusement, and he just gave me an annoying look.

He moved aside, and I held my mother securely. They brought a comfortable bed instead of a gurney. Two male staff came to me and gently took my mother from my embrace. They were careful, and it was already a big relief for me.

This pack was a bit different from the Black Lotus Pack. People coming in and going out of the hospital were also looking at me with strange gazes, but I didn’t see any contempt or disdain.

Even a mated she-wolf who came with her mate came to me when Mom suddenly stirred and I dropped my bag on the ground.

The he-wolf helped me adjust my mother’s body on the chairs, and the she-wolf asked me if I needed something to eat or drink.

I am sure that I was looking famished by now.

I thanked them for their help sincerely.

She told me her name—Ahaana, a regular wolf—and his mate – Ron, an assistant in the administration department of the pack, a regular wolf too.

I couldn’t say that they have become my friends, but it still felt good the way they treated me and my mother.

Ahaana even comforted me by saying that the doctors here are skilled and they will surely find a way to cure my mother.

It was a bit overwhelming, but I welcomed that comfort wholeheartedly.

Cody took my bag from me and grabbed my hand. I flinched a little at the sudden physical contact but relaxed immediately.

For the world, now I and Cody were married, and holding hands is a common gesture between couples.

We walked behind the bed. All the people around me still looked at me curiously.

“Don’t pay attention to them. They won’t judge you based on your wolf’s presence or absence.” Cody still comforted me, squeezing my hand gently.

I smiled but still felt uneasy under those gazes.

It took us quite a good time to settle my mother inside that single room. I slumped on the couch in the end.

The staff went out, leaving me and Cody inside. I felt exhausted and wanted to have a short nap before I went to Cody's place. The whole day was a perfect mess, but in the end, everything settled in a better way.

“I sent your mother’s reports to my professor at the UNI. He said that your mother can gain her health back.” Cody spoke in a serious tone while sitting on the single couch.

I immediately sat up straight, looking at him in shock.

“But she needs a stable and peaceful environment. I am glad that we made the right choice by bringing her.” He spoke further, and the hope that had died in my heart a long time ago seemed to get a lifeline.

“If nothing bad happens further, then she will be back to herself in a minimum of three months.” The smile that stretched on my lips also brought tears to my eyes.

He smiled too. He looked like an angel sent by the goddess to save me and my mother.

Yes, the goddess sent him to me.

“You can relax now, Hazel. Although.” He paused and adjusted his sitting position on the couch.

I sensed his uneasiness, which made me worried.

“My situation in the pack is a bit complicated.” He smacked his lips, looking troubled.

“We are now married, Cody, and if we are going to make this relationship work in front of other people, I must know all your circumstances.” I asked him with a serious face.

I only knew that he is the second son of the alpha Henry Nickelson, and his elder brother, Alexander Nickelson is the alpha of this pack.

Henry’s mate, and their mother, Cassendra Nickelson, is still the Luna of the pack, as Alexander is still unmated.

“I….. I am my father’s illegitimate son, Hazel.” I froze as soon as the words left his mouth.

For a few seconds, I just stared at his expressionless face in a daze, without blinking.

His eyes were blank, but I felt his sadness and pain.

“I…. I don’t know how it happened, but my father, Alpha Henry, brought me to this pack after my mother died when I was only three. Luna Cassendra couldn’t accept me, nor did her son, my elder half-brother, and I totally understand their resentment and hatred towards me.” He looked guilty and sad.

I wanted to comfort him by saying that this isn't his fault because no child has any control over who his parents can be, but I didn't get the right words.

"Dad wants me and Alexander to be in harmony, live like one loving family, but I know that it's not possible, not when they still hate me. I am not a saint, Hazel. I also have some resentments towards them, but..." He paused and took a deep breath, lowering his eyes.

He did a marvelous job by masking his emotions, but both I and Xyla understood the pain of isolation.

"After graduation, I opted to be a universal doctor, working with various other doctors in different packs instead of staying here. My brother had taken over the alpha title by then. Dad tried to fix my marriage with she-wolves from influential families... you know, business marriage stuff." he paused and lifted his lashes up, giving me a knowing look.
