Bab 1

Zephyrine Vesper POV

The water didn't rush here. It whispered over moss-slicked stones, carrying the cold bite of the Yukon thaw. Midnight in the borderlands was never truly silent, but tonight the forest held its breath the air thick with crushed pine and wet earth. I pulled my cloak tighter around my shoulders, though the chill under my skin had nothing to do with the mountain air. It was my own pulse, hammering too fast, and the scar along my collarbone, throbbing in time with it. A brand for a destiny I hadn't asked for.

A twig snapped across the creek.

My muscles locked. Every instinct told me to drop low, to bare my teeth at the dark. But the shape stepping out from under the spruce wasn't an enforcer, wasn't a rival wolf testing our border.

It was Kaelen.

He stopped on the far bank, breath pluming white. Soot smudged one cheekbone, and a fresh scratch cut along his jaw something from the timber yard, probably. He didn't look like danger. He never had. My pack saw humans as something smaller, slower, barely worth noticing. But Kaelen was the one thing in my life that didn't feel like it belonged to someone else.

"You're late," he said, low enough that it settled the static in my chest.

"My mother kept me in the study." I crossed the stones until I was close enough to touch him. "Border treaties. Bloodline ledgers I'm supposed to sign next week. Every name on that parchment feels like it's mine before I've agreed to anything."

He reached up and cupped my cheek, and I let myself lean into it, though the tenderness of it scared me more than it should have. He was so breakable. One wrong shift and I could snap his wrist without meaning to and yet it was me who felt unsteady, standing here shaking under his hand.

"Then don't sign them," he said. "Come with me. Past the timber line, past your elders and their ceremonies. There's a valley south of here where nobody's heard of moon-sworn crowns. Just us."

I laughed, and it came out bitter. "You say it like it's a walk through the woods. You know what happens to a wolf who leaves the pack, Kai. They don't hunt you for sport. They hunt to erase you. And the bond God, it's already waking up. Like my body's decided it belongs to someone else before I've had a say in it."

His thumb stilled against my cheekbone. He'd asked about the bond before, and I'd lied every time, calling it superstition, an old formality nobody really believed in anymore. I never told him what rejecting it actually meant: a fire under the skin that doesn't go out, until your lungs give up and your mind goes with them.

"I don't care about your fated mate," he said, though something moved behind his eyes when he said it. "I care about you. The girl who sneaks out here to eat stale bread by a creek because it's the only hour she gets to herself."

"I am myself," I whispered. "Right now. With you."

We stood like that a long time, wrapped up in the one hour a day that didn't belong to pack law. He pulled me against his chest, and I listened to his heartbeat fast, human, nothing like the pack's collective pulse. When he kissed me, it tasted like defiance. Slow, and a little desperate, like we both knew the clock was already running.

Then it broke.

Pain tore through my chest, sharp enough that I gasped into his mouth and my knees gave out. Not an injury. Worse a pull behind my sternum, the bond punishing me for staying away from a man I'd never met. My wolf clawed at the inside of my skull, and for a second the rejection sickness had real teeth.

Kaelen caught me before I hit the moss. "Zeph. Talk to me. Did someone follow you?"

"No." I pressed a hand to my chest, sweat cooling fast on my skin. The pain ebbed, leaving me hollowed out. "I'm fine."

"You're not fine, you're freezing." He pulled me in, trying to block the wind with his own body. "Let me walk you back to the ridge."

"We can't." I looked up at him, eyes burning. "The Mate Ceremony is in three days, Kai. After that I can't come here anymore. After that I belong to someone else on paper, in blood, all of it."

He went very still. Whatever softness had been in his face a moment ago hardened into something quieter and far more dangerous. He dug into his coat and pressed a small carved wolf into my palm the one he'd been whittling by candlelight for weeks, folding my fingers shut around it.

"Then don't go back," he said. "Meet me here tomorrow at midnight. Bring nothing. We go south before the moon finishes turning."

I stared at the rough wood in my hand, then at him somehow the only fixed point left in my life. Say yes, and I'd be declaring war on my own species. Say no, and I'd lose him to a wedding I never chose.

I never got the chance to answer.

A sound cut through the trees not a twig this time, but a howl. Low, deliberate, and close.

Kaelen went rigid, eyes cutting toward the ridge.

Two pairs of amber eyes were already watching us from the dark.
