ON OUR TERMS

I woke up feeling unusually calm, Maya tucked perfectly against my chest. For the first time in days, my mind wasn’t racing. The night before had helped—being close to her always did. She’d been tense earlier, frustrated after trying again to reach her mother through her magic.

“It’s like I can feel her,” she’d said quietly, “but I can’t reach her.”

“You don’t have to push yourself,” I told her. “Come with me. A cold bath might help.”

She had laughed softly. “You always have strange solutions.”

“They work, don't they?,” I’d replied.
