RETURNING HOME

A day passed far too quickly, and before I knew it, morning came—the day we had to leave.

When I woke up, the pack house was already alive. I went downstairs and found Mia and Maya in the kitchen, flour dusting their hands and faces as they baked together, laughing like they had known each other their whole lives.

“We’re bringing snacks,” Mia announced when she saw me. “Long journey.”

Maya smiled softly. “You don’t drive well on an empty stomach and I needed something to munch on.”

I shook my head with a small smile. “I’ll leave you to it then.”

They were happy like this, and I didn’t want to interrupt, so I headed back upstairs to freshen up.

Outside, the warriors were already moving about, loading our things into the car. Michael was inspecting the vehicle, making sure everything was in order for the trip. Everyone was efficient, focused but I could feel the heaviness in the air.
