Who Am I?
Evelyn's POV The bell above the door rang loudly just as I was about to reach for the last box on the shelf. A young woman walked in, clutching her purse tightly against her chest. “Damn it,” I muttered under my breath. “We're closed, ma'am.” “I know, but please, just a diaper. I realized too late that I didn't have any,” she pleaded. “It's for my baby.” I sucked my teeth and looked at her. I couldn't exactly turn her away when it was for her baby. “Let's get your order, and please hurry up, ma'am. I'm sure you wouldn't want to be on the news tomorrow morning.” And neither would I. I glanced toward the windows. The streets were already dark and nearly empty. Everyone knew it was better to be home before nightfall. Besides, I had my birthday to celebrate. Yeah, my eighteenth birthday was tomorrow. I couldn't help but smile at the thought. I would finally be eighteen, an adult. Maybe I could finally have a boyfriend without my dad losing his mind every time I mentioned a guy. Not that I had exactly waited for his permission before. I reached for the diapers and handed them to the woman. Once she paid, she hurried out. A few minutes later, I walked out of the mall and locked the door. I hid the key where my manager had told me to leave it every night. He would definitely have a problem if he couldn't find it the next morning. I walked down the street with my cap pulled tightly over my head and my headphones around my neck. I would have put them on, but lately, I'd felt like I was being followed, and I wanted to hear anything happening around me. The last time I'd mentioned to Theo that I might have a stalker, he'd almost lost his mind. I'd thought about telling my dad, but I knew he'd go crazy too. He'd probably stop me from going to work, and I didn't want that. Only when I saw the gate of our house in the distance did I let myself breathe. “Mom!” I shouted as I kicked my shoes off. “I brought spinach. I heard it's good for bones or something.” I stopped when I saw what was waiting for me inside. Both my parents were seated on the sofa, looking dead serious. That look usually meant I'd done something wrong, which I almost never did. “Mom, Dad, what's going on?” I asked as I shut the door behind me. “Sit down, Evelyn,” my mom said quietly. “I have to freshen up and have dinner,” I said, making to leave. “Sit down there, Evelyn. We won't take long. We just have something very important to tell you,” my dad added. He was quiet, and I always loved it when people told me I took after him. I dropped into the dining chair. Our apartment wasn't big, with the sitting room and dining area sharing the same space, but it was comfortable, and at least I had a room to myself. “What's going on, guys? You're scaring the shit out of me.” “You know we love you, right?” my mom asked, holding my dad's hand. “Yeah, and I have never doubted that.” I shifted in the chair. “Tomorrow is your eighteenth birthday, so it's important we tell you what we are about to say,” my mom added. I nodded for her to continue. “You're not one of us, Evelyn.” I cracked up immediately and started laughing, which must have caught my parents by surprise. “Yeah, I know I'm not one of you. I'm only eighteen, and you guys are ancient. You scared me for nothing, Mom.” “That's not what she's talking about, Evelyn,” my dad said. They were both looking more serious now. “You guys are really serious. Go on, Mom.” My heart was pounding hard against my chest. “You are not human like us. You're a werewolf.” For a few seconds, I stared at my mom. Then I burst out laughing. “Okay, you got me. That's a good one.” Neither of them laughed. My smile disappeared. I looked from my mom to my dad, waiting for one of them to tell me they were joking. “Wait…” I swallowed hard. “You're actually serious?” “Evelyn, listen to me. Werewolves are real. And they are not the only ones, but I don't have time to explain all of that tonight.” My heart began pounding even harder. “No. That's impossible.” I shook my head. “You guys are human, so how could I possibly be a wolf?” I stood up, my hands trembling. “I don't understand.” “We are not your real parents, Evelyn.” The words hit me. I stared at my mom. “What?” “Your real mother died while giving birth to you.” “No…” I whispered, shaking my head. “That's a lie. You didn't tell me all this before.” My dad cleared his throat, his voice quieter than before. “Let her continue.” I looked back at my mom, tears already filling my eyes. “Your mom was my sister. She died giving birth to you, and she entrusted you into my arms.” “No, Mom. I don't want to believe all this. I'm your daughter. I'm not any silly wolf you're talking about.” “Evelyn, calm down.” My dad stood up. “No! You can't ask me to calm down!” Tears streaked down my face. “What am I supposed to do with this information? Please tell me it's a lie. I'm your daughter, right, Dad?” “Evelyn, just listen to us.” “No,” I said as more tears streaked down my face. I ran out the door before my parents could stop me. I ran into the night. I didn't know where I was going, and I didn't care. All I knew was that I couldn't stay in that house after everything I'd just heard. My parents had lied to me my entire life, and now they expected me to believe that I was a werewolf. Tomorrow was my eighteenth birthday, and suddenly, I wasn't sure who I was anymore.Prisoner Kieran's POVThe dungeon beneath Blackthorn was cold and damp, the air thick with the smell of blood and rust.Kieran Rodriguez stood before the prisoner chained to the wall, his expression unreadable.Leon, a Drakon warrior, had been discovered injured near the old road by a Blackthorn patrol. When he had attempted to flee, the patrol had subdued him and brought him back for questioning. Now, he sat with his head bowed, blood staining his torn shirt."Do you know who I am?" Kieran asked.Leon raised his head, managing a bitter smile despite his injuries."The great Alpha of Blackthorn.""Good. Then you should understand that lying to me would be a foolish decision.""I have nothing to tell you."Kieran stepped closer."Your warriors have been spotted near my borders. One of them has disappeared, and now you're found bleeding in my territory. What exactly is Drakon planning?"Leon remained silent.Kieran's jaw tightened. He had little patience for games, especially when anot
The Alpha of Drakon Rafael's POV"Tell me you're joking."Rafael didn't look up from the documents on his desk."I don't repeat myself, Drake ."His Beta stood before him, his expression dark with disbelief."You're planning to send our warriors into Blackthorn territory to retrieve a girl we've barely managed to locate? Kieran has already increased his border patrols. If his men catch our warriors crossing the boundary, he'll consider it an act of war."Rafael finally raised his eyes."Then perhaps his men should learn to mind their own business."Drake exhaled sharply. "This isn't a game, Rafael.""Do I look like I'm playing?"Silence settled over the office.Rafael leaned back in his chair, studying his Beta. Drake had served him for years and understood that once Rafael made a decision, changing his mind was rarely an option.Still, Drake was one of the few people who dared challenge him when he believed he was making a mistake. And right now, he clearly did."Six of our warriors
Gathering Storm Kieran's POV The moment Evelyn Crane left my office, I knew she would be trouble. Not because she had questioned me. I had dealt with people far more dangerous than a grieving eighteen-year-old girl. It was her determination that bothered me. She wanted answers, and judging by the look in her eyes, she wouldn't stop until she got them. I returned to the report on my desk, but the words refused to hold my attention. Rafael wants her. Mrs. Crane's warning had troubled me long before Evelyn appeared at my door. Now, after speaking to the girl herself, I was no closer to understanding why the Alpha of Drakon would take an interest in someone who had spent her entire life believing she was human. There was something about her story that didn't add up. And I intended to find out what it was. A knock sounded at the door. "Come in." Derek entered, his usual amusement replaced by a serious expression. A folded report was clutched in his hand. "We have a problem."
A Dangerous Challenge Evelyn's POV I walked behind the two scouts, my heart pounding against my chest. Why would the Alpha suddenly summon me? Was I in trouble? Was he planning to send me away from the pack or, worse, force me to shift? There were so many questions I wanted to ask him, so many things I needed answers to. But the thought of standing before Kieran Rodriguez in his office made my stomach twist.I had to keep my fear hidden. The last thing I wanted was to give him another reason to look down on me.One of the scouts glanced over his shoulder and glared at me, clearly displeased with how far behind I'd fallen. I quickly lengthened my stride to catch up.We stopped outside the Alpha's office. The scout who had glared at me straightened before knocking three times."We've brought Miss Crane, Alpha," he announced."Send her in."The deep, authoritative voice came from inside. The scout opened the door and gestured for me to enter.I stared at him, then mouthed, "Alone?"I c
A Softer Side of Blackthorn. Evelyn’s POV I watched Valeria disappear through the dining hall doors, but the uneasy feeling she had left behind refused to disappear with her. Why had she been staring at me like that? I barely knew anyone in Blackthorn, yet I had already managed to attract the attention of the Alpha’s mistress. I couldn't decide whether that was a good thing or a terrible one. “Don't let her get to you,” Marina said beside me. I sat down and shifted my gaze to the table. “I just…” Marina collected the empty plates from the table. “Valeria is just like that. She likes making sure people know who she is.” “And who exactly is she?” Marina breathed out. “The Alpha's mistress. She's been with him for a while, and she doesn't appreciate anyone who threatens her position.” I frowned. “But I'm not threatening anything. I don't even know the man.” “That's what makes this complicated.” She gave me a small, apologetic smile. “Sometimes, people decide they dislike you
An Unwelcome Presence Evelyn's POV“Evelyn…”I felt a hand gently brush against my hair.My eyes opened, and for a moment, I saw my mother sitting beside me, smiling as she stroked my head.“Wake up, sweetheart.”I reached for her.“Mom…”But she disappeared the moment my fingers touched her.I stared at the unfamiliar ceiling, my heart pounding. Then I remembered where I was.Blackthorn Pack. The training. The crowd. Kieran Rodriguez. And my mother.A sharp ache filled my chest as I squeezed my eyes shut. I could still remember her final words, the fear in her eyes, and the blood staining her clothes.Run, Evelyn.I had done as she told me, but what was I supposed to do now? My parents were dead, their killers were still out there, and I had no idea why my mother had sent me to this place. All I had was a card bearing the name of a pack I knew nothing about and an Alpha who seemed to regard me as a nuisance.I needed answers.“Evelyn?”I turned to find Marina sitting beside my bed.
