Chapter 3. The final break with Alpha Lucan

The summons came at dusk on the fourth night.

A young runner found Phyna in the practice yard, still working the same forms her mother had drilled into her when no one else was watching. Sweat cut clean lines through the dust on her arms. The wooden post in front of her bore fresh scars from the edge of her practice blade.

“Alpha Lucan wants you in his study,” the boy said, eyes carefully lowered. “Now.”

Phyna wiped the blade on her sleeve, sheathed it, and followed without a word. The corridors of the main house felt narrower than they had a week ago. Every torch seemed to burn too bright. Somewhere deeper in the halls soft laughter drifted—Selene’s voice, Aria’s quieter answer. The sound slid under Phyna’s skin like a splinter.

The study door stood open. Lucan waited behind the heavy oak desk, shoulders squared, the same posture he used when delivering judgment in the hall. A single lamp burned. The rest of the room stayed in shadow. Maps of the borders covered one wall. The other held the old family crest, the running wolf her mother had once carried into battle.

Phyna closed the door behind her and stood in the center of the rug. She did not sit. She had not been invited to sit.

Lucan studied her for a long moment. The lines around his mouth had deepened since the night of the high table. When he finally spoke, his voice carried the careful weight of a man who had already decided the outcome.

“You have been seen leaving the grounds after dark.”

Phyna said nothing.

“Visiting your grandfather. Walking the eastern paths. Asking questions about routes that lead away from this pack.” He rested both hands on the desk. “I will not pretend I do not know what you are planning.”

Still she stayed silent. The quiet stretched until it felt like a held breath.

Lucan’s jaw tightened. “You will stop. Effective immediately. Pack Vale is your home. Your place is here, under my protection, whether you like the shape of that place or not.”

“My place was taken,” Phyna said. The words came out low and steady. “You gave it away in front of the entire hall.”

“I did what the pack required.” His voice rose half a measure. “A clear line of succession. A Luna who understands the soft arts of peace. A daughter who will not drag old controversies back into the light every time she draws breath.”

“You mean a daughter who will not remind them of Mother.”

The name landed between them like a thrown blade. Lucan’s eyes flashed.

“Your mother made her choices. She paid for them. I will not watch you walk the same road and call it honor.”

Phyna took one step closer to the desk. The lamp light caught the hard set of her mouth. “She died protecting this pack. She died because she refused to stay soft while enemies crossed our borders. And you let them bury her name along with her body.”

“Enough.”

“No.” The word cracked out of her, sharp and final. “You sat at that table and smiled while they replaced her. You handed my seat to a girl who has never held a real blade. You looked at me like I was the problem that needed solving. I am done pretending that does not cut.”

Lucan pushed back from the desk and stood. Even now he was taller, broader, the Alpha whose command had held Pack Vale through two wars. The air in the room thickened with the weight of his presence. Most wolves would have dropped their eyes. Phyna kept hers locked on his.

“You will remain here,” he said, each word measured. “You will take the place assigned to you. In time a suitable match will be arranged. A quiet alliance. Something that removes the edge from this bloodline before it causes more damage.”

The last sentence hung in the air like smoke.

Phyna felt something cold and clean settle behind her ribs. The last thread that had kept her hoping her father might still see her snapped with a sound only she could hear.

“I will not marry to make you comfortable,” she said. “I will not sit at the lesser tables and smile while they erase everything Mother was. And I will not stay in this house one night longer than I must.”

Lucan’s face hardened into the mask he wore for enemies. “You are fifteen. You have no resources, no alliances, and no permission. If you walk out that door I will send trackers before the sun clears the ridge. They will bring you back in chains if necessary.”

Phyna held his stare. Her heart hammered once, hard, then settled into a steady, dangerous rhythm.

“Then you had better send them early,” she said. “Because by the time the sun clears the ridge I will already be gone.”

For a long moment neither moved. The lamp flickered. Somewhere in the house a door closed. The ordinary sounds of evening continued as if the world had not just shifted on its axis.

Lucan’s voice dropped. “Do not force me to treat you as a rogue, Phyna.”

“You already did,” she answered. “The night you told the pack I no longer belonged at your side.”

She turned before he could speak again. The door opened under her hand. She did not look back. The corridor stretched ahead, torchlit and empty. She walked it with her spine straight and her steps measured, the way Lyra had walked away from every argument she had already won in her own mind.

In her room she worked quickly. The short blade Torin had given her went into the hidden sheath along her calf. The leather bracers slid under her sleeves. The map and the pouch of silver disappeared into the inner pocket of her cloak. She left the rest—dresses, formal cloaks, the small jewelry that marked her as the Alpha’s daughter—untouched on the bed. They belonged to a girl who no longer existed.

The service stair was dark. She took it in silence, boots soft on the stone. Outside, the night air cut clean and cold. Frost already glittered on the grass. The moon rode high, nearly full, flooding the practice yard with silver light.

She crossed the open ground without slowing. The cottage window glowed once, briefly, as if Torin had been watching. She did not stop. The eastern path opened between the pines, exactly as the map had shown. She followed it at a steady run, breath even, senses stretched wide for any sound of pursuit.

Behind her the main house of Pack Vale stood dark against the sky. The high table, the soft new Luna, the father who had chosen peace over blood—all of it fell away with every stride. The forest closed around her. The scent of pine and cold earth filled her lungs. Somewhere ahead the trading post waited, and beyond it the Academy gates, and beyond those the road her mother had never been allowed to finish walking.

Phyna did not look back.

The first pale light of morning was still hours away when she reached the ridge that marked the edge of pack territory. She paused only long enough to pull the cloak tighter and check the blade at her calf. The silver in her pocket pressed against her ribs like a second heartbeat.

She stepped across the boundary line without hesitation.

The girl who had been told she no longer belonged was already gone.

What walked into the dark was something else entirely—something with her mother’s blood in its veins and no intention of ever asking permission again.

The wind rose behind her, carrying the last scent of home into the trees. Phyna set her face to the east and kept moving. The sun would rise on an empty room and an Alpha who had underestimated how completely his daughter could disappear.

By then she would be far beyond his reach.

And she would not be coming back the same.

Rain found her before the second night fully settled. It began as a thin needle-sting against her face, then thickened into sheets that turned the forest path to mud. Thunder rolled across the ridges like distant war drums. Lightning split the sky in white forks, briefly turning every tree into a black skeleton. Phyna pulled the hood of her cloak tighter and kept moving. The map Torin had given her was already soft at the edges from the wet, but the route remained clear in her mind. Three days to the trading post. From there, the Academy. First she needed the one thing the map could not provide. She needed to disappear. The old stories said a witch lived in the deep hollow where the two rivers met and the trees grew too close together for honest wolves to walk comfortably. Phyna had listened to those stories with half an ear as a child. Tonight she followed them like a blood trail. The air changed as she descended the last slope. It grew heavier, charged, tasting of iron and wet leave

The house slept, but Phyna did not.She waited until the last footsteps faded from the corridors and the low voices of the night watch drifted past her door. Then she rose, pulled on a dark cloak, and slipped into the narrow service stair that led to the rear of the grounds. Frost bit at her bare ankles. The moon rode high and white, turning every stone path into a pale ribbon. She knew the way by heart. Her grandfather’s cottage stood beyond the practice yard, tucked against the treeline where the pack rarely bothered to look. Smoke curled from the chimney even at this hour. He never slept much. Neither had Lyra.Phyna pushed the door open without knocking. The familiar scent of woodsmoke, dried herbs, and old leather wrapped around her at once. Grandfather Torin sat in his usual chair by the hearth, a thick blanket across his knees, eyes already on the doorway as if he had been waiting.“You’re late,” he said. His voice was rough gravel, but the corners of his mouth lifted.“They ke

The high table had never looked so full.Phyna stood at the edge of the great hall and watched the new Luna take the seat that still smelled of her mother’s oil and steel. Selene moved like water poured into a perfect vessel, every fold of her pale gown arranged, every strand of dark hair pinned without a single slip. Beside her sat Aria, sixteen and soft-mouthed, eyes lowered in the exact way a future Luna was taught to lower them. The two of them filled the space Lyra had once occupied as if the warrior woman had never existed at all.Alpha Lucan rose. The hall quieted at once. His voice carried the weight of command that had held Pack Vale for twenty years.“From this night forward, Luna Selene sits at my right hand. Her daughter, Aria, is welcomed as blood of this house. Let no wolf forget it.”Phyna’s hands curled into fists at her sides. She had not been invited to stand closer. She had not been asked to speak. She was fifteen, still growing into the height she had inherited fro
