CHAPTER 7: The Wedding — The Sea Returns

The wedding was not in a church.

Lucian knew Odessa would hate a church. He knew she belonged to the sea.

So he built a stage on the water itself. On the old pier. The same pier where she was left, where she was proposed to, where she was found.

The entire city was invited. Not because they liked them, but because they were afraid to say no to Lucian Dela Cruz.

White flowers everywhere. Black pearls. The sea was calm, unnaturally calm, as if holding its breath.

Odessa was in a white dress, but not a traditional gown. It was flowing, like water, with black pearl details — the same black pearl as her ring. Her hair was down, wavy, with small shells braided in. She didn't smell like perfume today. She smelled like the sea. And for the first time, she was proud of it.

Petrus walked her down the aisle — the wooden planks of the pier.

"You look like your mother," he whispered, crying.

At the end of the aisle, Lucian waited. In a black suit, his blue-gray eyes never leaving her. Possessive, even on their wedding day.

But there were two empty chairs in the front row.

One for Marco. One for Lena.

Odessa had invited them. Personally.

"Why did you invite them?" Lucian had asked last night, his jaw tight with jealousy.

"Because they need to see what they lost," Odessa had said. "And because today, I forgive them."

Lucian didn't like it, but he agreed. Because he could never say no to his little storm.

Marco and Lena arrived, looking thin, tired, in cheap clothes. They sat in the empty chairs, not daring to look up.

The ceremony started. The priest — an old fisherman priest from Petrus's village — spoke about love and the sea.

Then, just as Odessa was about to say "I do," the sea changed.

A cold wind blew. The calm water started to ripple. The white flowers swayed violently.

Everyone gasped.

From the water, a woman emerged.

She was soaking wet, but not drowning. She walked on the water as if it were solid. Her black hair was long, like Odessa's, but with streaks of white. Her eyes were the same stormy eyes as Odessa's. She wore a simple blue dress, torn and faded.

Odessa's hand flew to her mouth. She knew that face from the photo.

"Mother?" she whispered.

The woman smiled. "My little storm."

It was her mother. The last siren. The one everyone thought drowned ten years ago.

Lucian stepped in front of Odessa protectively, but Odessa pushed past him.

Her mother walked onto the pier, water dripping from her dress, but her feet were dry. She touched Odessa's face.

"You grew up so beautiful," her mother said, her voice like waves. "I watched you. The sea showed me. I saw you working at the market. I saw you crying on this pier. I saw you become strong. I wanted to come back, but sirens can only return when their child is truly happy. And today... today you are truly happy."

Odessa was crying hard now. "You left me. You left me in a boat."

"I had to," her mother said, crying too. "The storm that night was not a normal storm. It was men. Men who hunt sirens for their pearls. Your father... Lucian's father... they tried to protect us, but they failed. I put you in the boat to save you. The sea promised me it would keep you safe. And it did. It gave you to Petrus. And to Lucian."

Lucian looked down, ashamed. "My father told me about the hunters. He never told me he was part of it."

"Your father regretted it until the day he died," Odessa's mother said to Lucian. "That's why he left you the photo. He wanted you to fix his mistake. And you did."

Odessa hugged her mother tightly, not caring that she was getting wet.

Marco and Lena were staring, terrified, unable to understand what they were seeing.

Odessa turned to them, still holding her mother.

"Marco, Lena," she said, her voice clear, carrying over the sea. "This is my mother. The woman you said smelled like the sea and should drown. She is alive. And she forgives you too."

Marco couldn't speak. Lena fainted.

Odessa turned back to her mother. "Will you stay?"

Her mother smiled sadly. "I cannot stay long, anak. Sirens belong to the sea. But I can stay for your wedding. I can see you get married. And I can give you my blessing."

She placed a hand on Odessa's belly — a belly that was still flat, but where a small life was already beginning. A secret Odessa had just discovered yesterday and hadn't told Lucian yet.

Odessa's eyes widened. "How did you—"

"A mother knows," her mother whispered. "And the sea knows. A new little storm is coming."

Lucian heard it. His possessive eyes widened, then filled with tears — the first time anyone had ever seen Lucian Dela Cruz cry.

"A baby?" he whispered, his hand shaking as he touched Odessa's belly.

Odessa nodded, crying and laughing.

Her mother laughed too, a sound like a beautiful, sad song.

"I do," Odessa said, before the priest even asked again. "I do. I do. I do."

"I do," Lucian said, holding her tightly, his forehead against hers.

The priest pronounced them husband and wife.

And as they kissed, the sea rose behind them — not a dangerous wave, but a beautiful, high arch of water, like a cathedral made of sea, with sunlight shining through it, making rainbows.

The whole city cheered. Petrus sobbed loudly.

And in the front row, Marco finally understood.

He didn't just lose a girl who smelled like the sea.

He lost a siren. A queen. A storm.

And it was too late. Forever too late.

The wedding ended, but the legend of Odessa, the girl who smelled like the sea and became the woman who owned the storm, had just begun.
