Adrian
I dropped his toy train and walked over to meet Steven, the pack doctor, who was now gathering up his equipment.
“Steven” I turned around to look at Milo, to make sure he couldn't hear me “What do you think? When do you think he would be able to talk?"
From his expression alone, I already knew what he wanted to say and it wasn't good news.
He simply shook his head, not wanting to add salt to the injury. Disappointment washed through me as I walked him out. Every time he paid a visit, I had always hoped that he would give me good news, that he would talk real soon.
Ever since Asher, my former Beta and his father passed on, he had been like this.
Milo was his father's son and the only thing Asher held dearest to his heart. Their bond was so strong that when Milo realized that his father wasn't coming back from the war like other men, he fell ill.
To make matters worse, Hailey, his mother, left him because she wasn't able to cope with his illness.
Milo had no one to care for him so I took him in as my son. Not just because he was alone, but because Asher was my best friend and confidant. This was the least I could do for him so he could rest in peace.
By the time I got back to the room, Milo was already in bed so I crawled in with him and patted him to sleep. That was all he ever did. He played with his toys a bit but most times, he just slept.
It bothered me because I didn't want him to grow up alone. I may not be there all the time and I wanted him to have people around him to be there for him.
The door opened and Nora stood in the doorway with her hand over her mouth. She signaled for me to come outside and I shooed her away. Slowly crawling out of Milo’s bed, I made sure he was asleep before shutting the door behind me.
“What is it?” I met up with her in the drawing room upstairs.
She crossed her hands against her chest and pushed herself off the wall. She gave me a once over and I already knew there was something in her mind. I just couldn’t guess what.
“You haven't given me an answer to my question.”
I racked my brain but couldn't seem to even remember what the question was.
Nora wasn’t my beta officially, but she does everything a beta would. And she did it good.
“You said you were going to think about what I said." She sounded exasperated.
It still didn't ring a bell.
“You. Getting married. Again.”
I rolled my eyes and held the door handle.
“I was never married before. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be doing something important."
“Okay, wait.” She grabbed my hand. “This time around, it's not just for me. Listen, things aren't looking good with the wolves from the Red Moon Pack. If we want them to actually sign the treaty, then we need a Luna.”
“Red Moon doesn't have a Luna." I wanted to roll my eyes.
“But at least, the Alpha has been married. Listen, just think about it and this time, try to do something about it.”
Deep down, she knew that I wasn't going to do anything about it. Not now, not ever.
“Adrian, you-”
“I’ll think about it, on one condition.” Her smile fell. “How about you find your mate first?"
She burst out laughing.
“I'm not like you, Adrian. We're not in the same situation. Besides, men are trouble. I'm fine the way I am."
We both laughed and as she walked away, I actually put some thought into what she said.
Maybe Milo needs a motherly figure to finally talk.
“Finally, you're speaking a language I can relate to.”
Of course, it would take a topic like this that would get Allister to finally show his ugly face.
He is family, and like every family, he is the most annoying of all.
He had been one of the supporters of Nora's campaign to get me another mate but no matter what they did or planned to do, their plans won't work.
“Forget it, it's not going to happen.”
Right now, my primary and only focus was Milo. The only thing that would make me so happy was to see him talking, nothing else.
“But just think about it. If you find a new mate, you'll be happier. Milo would have a motherly figure which every child needs and you'll be able to sign the treaty with Red Moon."
I ignored him because it was the only thing to do. The moment he started his rant, he would never shut up. I had never met a wolf that talked so much.
“Adrian, just-”
“Forget it, Allister. Just drop it. How many times do I have to tell you that I'm not interested in being with someone else? Have you forgotten so quickly what Emily did or have you forgotten what Hailey did to Milo? The way she abandoned Milo just like that? You can't possibly expect me to forget all that and move on!"
The memories were still very fresh in my head. The pain, the way I felt when Emily left me, the countless days that I tried begging her to come back. The horrible days after she left, how hard it had been for me to pull myself from that darkness. No, I couldn't possibly move on.
Just the mention of her name made me feel a pang in my chest, but I quickly shoved it away. I was over this, over her.
I had promised myself after everything that I wouldn’t waste my time with women ever again. I would never marry, or claim a mate. And this little plan they have to push me to do it isn’t going to make me change my mind.
“Adrian, I didn't mean-” Allister started but up I cut him off sharply.
“Forget it." My tone was final.
He got the message that I wasn’t in the mood. They both didn’t try to speak again.
I still wasn’t back to normal, after the unnecessary reminder of Emily and what happened with her.
I couldn't concentrate so I walked out of his room and went back to mine before changing my course and heading towards the door.
A run in the woods was the perfect thing to take my mind off all this talk that was annoying me.
Quickly changing out of my formal wear, I put on normal clothes and slipped into the dark woods.
KAYA It was the middle of May. Milo had come back home to spend some time with us. After his coronation, he had left the pack to spend time living as a normal person so that he would understand what it means to live among the people. Adrian didn't like it because he felt like Milo could be learning about the kingdom rather than doing all that but the boy's mind had been set. I could understand where they were both coming from but since it was what he wanted, I couldn't stop him and neither could his father. The only condition Adrian gave him was that he would stay with Roy. If he stayed with Roy, then his heart would be more at peace knowing that he was with someone he trusted. Roy loved the idea of Milo being over and so since the beginning of the year, he had been there. When I told him it was his father's birthday, he knew he had to come back. This time around, we didn't want a big celebration. Although since it was an official holiday, the entire kingdom knew and the
KAYA There was finally time for Milo's coronation. We had been putting it off for so long but now, we were going to make it happen. It had taken me a week to make all preparations because I wanted this to be perfect. I'd sent out the invitations earlier to everyone and made sure everything down to the last detail was ready. Milo was very excited about this and I could see how much this meant to him. He and Adrian had been spending the week together because Adrian said it was part of his hazing ceremony to welcome him into the circle of Kings. Unlike the forest his father had left him in for a week to find for himself, he wanted to do things that he hadn't done with Milo before like fishing and hunting. The party was tonight and I just got a call from the tailor that there had been some issues with the clothes. Milo's clothes to be exact. I didn't want to lose it because I knew I had to find a solution one way or another and I had to find it fast. I hurried over to the
KAYATWO MONTHS LATERMaybe I was the one who was mad. Maybe I was losing it. As soon as the maid told me I ran out of my room and went downstairs. The madness in this house had to stop. I had endured tol much from that bitch and maybe she thought that since I was quiet, I was stupid but not again. The kitchen door was locked just as I thought it would be. “Selena! You stupid bitch! Open the door!” I could hear her moving around inside and she laughed. “Oh, I see they came to report to you again. As I told them, I'll be cooking Adrian's food today. I mean, after all. I'm basically just a second wife.”Second wife?! In what universe?! The maids said that before they woke up, she had locked herself in the kitchen and they couldn't even make breakfast for the twins to take to school. “Are you nuts? This is my house and my kitchen! Open the damn door!” “Why don't you kick it o
KAYA When we got to the grave site, we were amazed because it wasn't your normal six feet. “She was claustrophobic. I don't think it'd be fair to give her a tight grave.” We could understand that and we stayed there with him when he said things to her and told her how much he loved her and missed her. It rained earlier that day so maybe that just made the whole thing gloomier. We went back to the house with the guests. The food has been ready since last night and we just stood in a corner while Roy attended to his guests. The kids had to stay upstairs because we didn't want thtme to be down here. It was only Roy's son that was down here. “Thank you so much for coming, everyone. I really appreciate you for being here. My wife would have been so happy to know that there were many people who actes about her. Its just said that it's only at her death that we had this crowd. I don't really have much to say but I l
KAYAWe couldn't stay with Roy even though we wanted to. Adrian was the King, there was no way that he would not sleep in the house. Well, at least that's what Roy had been trying to tell him for the past hour but it was like everything he said went over his ears. He didn't want to hear any of it. “Roy, this is not just a condolence visit. It's a friendly visit. You've been my friend for years and you don't expect me to go home when you need me. I need to stay here with you.” Roy looked drained. I didn't like that Adrian was arguing with him but then again, Adrian wasn't going to stop until he got what he wanted. He turned to me for help and all I could do was just stare at him. “Kay, please say something.”I didn't want to tell him not to worry because there was nothing that he was going to say that would make Adrian change his mind but I didn't say that. I also know that it was a technique to take Roy's mind
KAYAThe morning came with bad news. I was still in bed when Lorian came to wake me up that Adrian and Nora were going out. At first, I didn't understand what he was talking about because I was so sleepy. Adrian had kept me up late last night talking and talking and making sure that I had forgiven him. I picked up my robe and ran out of the room because he was dragging me out. Luckily, I got outside before the car drove off. “Adrian, what's going on? Is everything okay?”He turned around to look at me. “Roys wife is dead. We just got a call now. We're going there to see him. I didn't want to wake you up.”The words couldn't form in my mouth. I just stayed there and stared at him. Roy's wife is dead. “Go, I'll meet up with you later.”As the car drove off, I just watched it go. In the end, the cancer had won. Gosh, I couldn't imagine what he would be going through right now.
ADRIANIt was like she had developed some kind of power because with the way she was walking, I found it so hard to catch up with her. Even when I tried to hold her hand, she wouldn't let me. “Kay, please wait. Let me speak to you.”If I couldn't hold her hand, I would have to hold her legs because I could let her use anger to ruin this. “What’s the whole point of talking? Do you know how long we've been talking for? There's no use. There's only action now.”Thankfully, Nora appeared since we had passed her room and she had heard the noise. “What is going on?”I had to tell her through a mind link since I couldn't risk anyone else hearing what I had said. The walls had ears. “I knew something was up with the way they just appeared out of nowhere. Where did you get a gun?”I wondered when she had seen a gun in my hand and then I realized that she was speaking to Kaya. I slowly grabbed
ADRIAN I knew that I was the last person that she wanted to see but I still had to go see her. Now that things were finally over, it was the right time to see her. Normally, I should have waited until she got enough sleep so that she won't feel irritated when i woke her up. Her being irritated would just make things harder for us to talk out. But I was already at her door and I couldn't go back. Wait, why couldn't I go back? She doesn't know I'm here yet. Yes, I should let her sleep and then come back in the morning when she's well rested. As I turned my back to leave, I heard footsteps and then the door opened. We ended up looking at each other for a while before I came closer to the door. “Hey, I thought you'd be asleep and I didn't want to wake you up.”She looked at me with her eye half open. “No, you knew I was awake. You were scared. Come in.” Of course, she knew. I stepped int
KAYA “You were the one who packed up and left our three day old child in the hospital! You left me for over sixteen years and you think that I won't move on? I shouldn't even be looking for you to begin with but I didn't so that out son will have closure and you blame me for loving a woman who had a very good heart and cared for me?” The whole thing was conflicting because to an extent, I could understand what Alisha has gone through and how that shaped her life but what I couldn't understand was how Lucy got caught in her crazy web. “It doesn't matter if I left. You can't fall in love with my best friend or the woman I've loved for years! Its not fair. On top of all that, you only used me for sex. I hated all of you. I hated you and I hated Tim. But I couldn't hate Lucy. She was just the victim in all of this. I was sure that if she could understand that I truly loved her, then we would be together. She was the only one who only ever understood me. She knew my story, she knew abou
