LOGINMelindana’s POV
I walked around the room slowly, taking it in properly this time without the maid hovering over me with that worried expression. The room was large, larger than it had to be for one person, and everything in it was delicate and expensive and arranged with the kind of obsessive care that said whoever lived here had both the money and the time to care deeply about such things. “So Alpha Luca is my husband,” I said out loud, more to myself than to the maid who was still standing near the doorway watching me with her eyes filled with surprise. I stopped pacing. “And who was the woman standing beside him when we pulled up?” The maid’s hands tightened slightly in front of her apron. “Alpha said she is his fated mate, Luna. Her name is Hailey.” I turned that over in my head for a moment. “So I am not his fated mate.” “No Luna.” “Then how exactly did I become Luna.” The maid opened her mouth and then closed it again and I could see the worry sitting right behind her eyes before she even said anything. I didn’t push. I had already gotten what I needed from her face alone. She hesitated for a moment, then spoke carefully. “Luna, if you are upset about any of this, your father Alpha Alexandra is always there. He would not stand for any of this, you know he would get justice for you.” I looked at her. “My father.” “And this father of mine,” I said, keeping my voice even. “He is where exactly.” “Blackthorn Pack, Luna. He is the Alpha there. One of the wealthiest and most powerful Alphas in the entire region.” She said it with a quiet pride that suggested she thought very highly of him. “If you wanted to go back to Blackthorn, Alpha Alexandra would make sure nobody could touch you. He would get justice for you, Luna, whatever you needed.” I turned that over quietly. A powerful father, a title, a house full of money. Whatever I had woken up into, weakness was not part of it. “What is your name,” I said. She blinked. “Luna?” “Your name. What do I call you.” “Julie, Luna.” “Julie,” I said, stopping my pacing. “The woman outside, Hailey. Has she been settled in?” Julie hesitated. “Not yet Luna.” “See to it.” I moved toward the dresser. “She is a guest in this house and I am still Luna here. It is my responsibility to make sure she is comfortable.” I opened the second drawer and looked through it until I found what I was looking for, a set of expensive lingerie. I held it out to Julie. “Put this in her room. “Luna, are you sure you want….” Have the kitchen send up food, something warm and properly made. Julie stared at me in disbelief. Whatever she had been expecting me to say, it was not that. She took the clothing piece from me. “The Alpha has found his fated mate,” I continued, turning back toward the mirror. “That is a good thing. The least I can do is make sure she feels welcome.” “Can you arrange that?” “Yes Luna,” Julie said slowly. “Good.” I turned away from the mirror. “Now I want a bath drawn, hot, and after that I want a massage arranged. My back is sore and my head is still hurting.” I moved toward the bed and sat on the edge of it. “And tell the kitchen I want wine sent up, something good. Julie nodded and moved quickly, clearly more comfortable with instructions and errands. The bath actually helped. The hot water worked through the soreness that had settled into the muscles of this small soft body and I lay in it longer than I intended to, staring at the ceiling and running through everything Julie had told me. I was in a complicated situation. That much was clear. By the time the massage started I had drunk half a glass of wine and decided that it was genuinely excellent. I lay face down on the bed while the girl Julie had called in worked through my shoulders and I stared at the dark wood of the headboard and thought about everything I had woken up into. So Alpha Luca had his fated mate. Good for him. I had absolutely no feelings about that man and I was not about to manufacture any. I had woken up in the body of a woman whose father was one of the most powerful and wealthy Alphas in the entire region, with a title, a house that looked like it belonged in a magazine and wine that was honestly some of the best I had ever tasted in my life. Who cares about this husband and his so-called mate, am I supposed to be crying over him? Nah. The girl worked a knot loose from somewhere near my left shoulder and I exhaled and reached for my wine glass on the bedside table, lifting my head just enough to take a long slow sip before settling back down into the pillow. I set the glass back down and then picked it up again almost immediately. It really was exceptional. I turned my head slightly toward where Julie was standing quietly near the door, waiting to be needed. “Is there more wine where that came from?” Julie nodded once. “Please honey,” I said, settling back down into the pillow, “fill my glass. This is good stuff.”Aurelius POVI had driven that road a hundred times every time I’m coming back from the eastern border and I never stopped for anything on it.It was past midnight and I was coming back from the eastern border where two pack Alphas had spent three hours of my evening arguing about a boundary line that had existed unchanged even before they were born, and I was tired, and the road was empt and dark. Then my headlights caught her.A woman on the ground at the side of Crest Road, one hand braced against the concrete, ginger hair falling forward, a dress that cost more than what most people in this town earned in a month, soaked through with blood at the collar and chest.I pulled over immediately.I knew who she was before I reached her. Arabella Ivory, Luna of Cinderclaw, daughter of Alexandra of Blackthorn. I had seen her at two or three formal gatherings over the years, always beside her husband Luca, always dressed perfectly. I had never thought about her beyond that. She was Luca’s
Melindana’s POVThe banquet had settled back into itself after the King’s outburst and I was sitting with my empty glass trying to look interested in the conversations happening around me but my thoughts were clouded with nothing but Aurelius. I was fantasizing about him doing unholy things to me when my eyes landed on the back of Luca’s neck.Luca was turned slightly away from me, reaching across to pour Hailey a drink, and that was when I saw it behind his ear. A crescent shaped mark, faded at the edges that shows it’s been sitting on his skin long enough that it doesn’t look new. Months old at least from the look of it.I stared at it for a moment and then looked across at Hailey who was seated beside him doing her soft pleasant smile at whoever was speaking and I looked back at the mark then back at Hailey and it dawned on me.So this had not started when he brought her home a couple of nights ago. This had been going on considerably longer than that and the woman whose body I wa
Melindana’s POVI was on my feet before I had fully processed what had happened, grabbing the cloth napkin from the table and moving toward him already saying the words before I had them form in my mouth properly.“I am so sorry, I am so sorry, I didn’t mean to, please I…..”“Didn’t I tell you,” Luca’s voice came from behind me, loud and sharp, and pointed entirely at my back, “to keep your clumsy self in check. Didn’t I say that specifically. Now you have embarrassed me, embarrassed yourself and caused trouble mostly for yourself, well done.”“Heyyyyy.”Aurelius’s voice cut across the room and I froze with the napkin still pressed against the front of his jacket. My whole body went still , absolutely certain for one full second that I was about to be removed from the face of the earth entirely and possibly from the palace to prison. Then I raised my head slowly and looked at him and realised his eyes were not on me at all. They were on Luca.“Don’t speak to a woman that way,” he said
Melindana’s POVLuca was already at the bottom of the staircase when I came down and the first thing he did was look at his watch, then look at me, then look at his watch again like the two things were related to each other in a way that personally inconvenienced him.“You took forever,” he said. “We are already late.”“You’re welcome,” I said, stepping off the last stair. He looked me up and down slowly, taking in my outfit, and whatever he saw apparently annoyed him because his expression went from impatient to something else.“What exactly are you wearing to the King’s banquet,” he said. “You look like it’s your own party. Are you trying to seduce the Lycan King or something, is that what this is about.”I tilted my head slightly. “I dressed appropriately for a formal evening. Is there a problem.”“Nobody is going to look at you,” he said flatly. “Only a man with absolutely no sense would look at you in that dres
Melindana’s POVJulie had been stealing glances at me the entire thirty-five minutes she had been helping me get ready in this room, quick little looks she clearly thought I wasn’t noticing, moving around me like one wrong word would earn her a slap. She still moved around me like I was something that might go off without warning. Every time she came too close she did this thing where she held her breath slightly, hands quick and careful, retreating the second she was done with whatever task she had assigned herself. I watched her in the mirror while she worked and said nothing because I was still trying to understand what exactly the woman before me had done to this girl to make her this way.Whatever it was, it must have been significant.I turned back to my own reflection and looked at myself properly for the first time since last night. The face was genuinely beautiful, that much I had already established, but standing here in the full light of the dressing room with Julie hoveri
Melindana’s POVI was in the middle of a perfectly good dream that I was not ready to leave when something pulled me out of it, a presence in the room that did not belong there, standing entirely too close to my bed for this hour of the morning. I opened my eyes slowly and the first thing I saw was my nightmare of a husband, just as Julie told me yesterday. Luca was standing at my bedside with his arms crossed and an expression on his face that sat somewhere between concern and irritation. On his face those two things were essentially indistinguishable from each other and from his regular resting expression so I wasn’t entirely sure which one this was supposed to be. I sat up and pulled the sheets immediately with me. “What are you doing in here.”“What am I doing here?” He repeated it back to me like he found the question ridiculously beneath him. “I heard you hit your head yesterday. I didn’t know it would make you go a little cuckoo though.” He used his index finger to tap the s
