No More Misunderstandings...

Liam had spent most of his adult life avoiding unnecessary drama.

Which was why finding Sophie Bennett sitting in his office waiting for him immediately put him in a bad mood.

He stopped in the doorway.

His assistant looked nervous.

Very nervous.

"Sir, Miss Bennett said it was important."

Liam glanced at Sophie.

She stood when she saw him.

"Thank you," she told the assistant.

The poor man practically fled.

Leaving Liam alone with a conversation he already knew he wasn't going to enjoy.

"What are you doing here?"

His tone wasn't rude and it wasn't welcoming either and Sophie noticed.

She always noticed.

"I needed to talk to you."

Liam loosened his tie and walked toward his desk.

"About what?"

For a moment she simply looked at him as if studying him.

Almost as if she was searching for something or perhaps confirming something she already knew.

Finally she asked,

"Did you ever love me?"

The question caught him completely off guard.

Silence settled between them.

Sophie gave a small laugh which was not a happy one.

"That bad, huh?"

Liam exhaled slowly.

He wasn't someone who enjoyed hurting people.

Especially when they didn't deserve it.

And despite everything, Sophie didn't deserve cruelty.

She deserved honesty.

Maybe honesty was long overdue.

"Sophie..."

"No."

She shook her head.

"Just answer the question."

The vulnerability in her voice surprised him.

Because for years Sophie had always seemed confident, perfectly composed, untouchable.

Now she looked like a woman bracing herself for disappointment.

Liam sat down.

For several moments he said nothing.

Then he answered.

"No."

The single word landed softly.

Yet it felt heavy and final.

Sophie lowered her eyes.

Some part of her had already known.

But hearing it aloud felt very different.

"I cared about you."

Liam continued.

"I still do."

A humorless smile appeared on her lips.

"But not like that."

"No."

For the first time in years, there was no misunderstanding.

No assumptions.

No room for false hope.

There was just the truth.

Sophie looked out the window.

The city stretched endlessly below.

It looked beautiful, distant yet cold.

Very much like the future she had imagined with Liam.

A future that had never really existed.

"You know what's embarrassing?"

Liam remained silent.

"I spent years thinking I was being patient."

She laughed quietly.

"Turns out I was just waiting for something that was never going to happen."

The honesty surprised both of them.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Sophie turned toward him.

"Was it always Judith?"

The question lingered in the air.

Liam thought about it carefully.

Because this answer mattered.

More than she realized.

"I don't know."

Sophie frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means I didn't realize what I felt until after she left."

And there it was.

The truth, the ugly truth.

The one Liam hated most.

Because it made him sound foolish.

And maybe just maybe, he was.

Sophie studied his face.

For the first time, she saw something she had never noticed before.

Regret.

Real regret.

Not because of the pregnancy.

Not because of public opinion.

Because of Judith.

Because of love.

The realization hurt.

Yet strangely, it also brought relief.

Because now she finally understood.

She hadn't lost to Judith.

There had never been a competition.

A few minutes later, Sophie stood.

"I should go."

Liam nodded.

Neither knew what else to say.

At the door, she paused.

Then looked back.

"When you finally get her back..."

Liam's eyes lifted.

"...don't waste it."

The words caught him off guard.

Before he could respond, Sophie smiled.

A small, sad smile.

Then she left.

For the first time in years, Sophie cried on the drive home.

Not because Liam rejected her.

That pain had existed for a while.

She cried because she was finally letting go.

Of the dreams.

The expectations.

The version of the future she had built in her head.

Sometimes moving forward required grieving things that never belonged to you.

And Sophie was finally learning that lesson.

───

That evening, Liam found himself outside the Lux estate.

He hadn't planned to come.

Yet somehow he was here.

The gates opened after security confirmed his identity.

A few minutes later, he found Judith sitting in the garden.

A blanket rested over her legs.

A book lay open in her lap.

She looked peaceful.

The sight alone eased something inside him.

Judith looked up.

"What are you doing here?"

Liam sat in the chair opposite hers.

"I was nearby."

The lie was terrible.

Judith immediately rolled her eyes.

"You drove forty minutes."

"I said nearby."

She laughed.

And for a moment, neither spoke.

The garden lights glowed softly around them.

The evening air was cool.

Comfortable.

Eventually Judith closed her book.

"Something happened."

It wasn't a question.

Liam looked surprised.

"How do you know?"

"You only get that thoughtful look when something is bothering you."

The statement made him smile faintly.

Funny.

He used to think Judith didn't notice him.

Turns out she always had.

"I spoke to Sophie."

The smile disappeared from Judith's face.

Not because she was jealous.

Because she was confused.

"What about?"

Liam looked directly at her.

"Everything that should've been clarified years ago."

Judith remained quiet.

Waiting.

Liam took a breath.

Then said simply,

"There won't be any more misunderstandings."

Something in his voice made her believe him.

Completely.

For the first time, Liam had finally closed a door he should have closed years ago.

And although neither of them knew it yet, that conversation would change more than one life.

Because sometimes moving forward required letting go of the wrong person.

Before you could properly fight for the right one.

Forever, This Time...Three Months LaterThe Smith mansion had never been this noisy. Not because of business meetings. Not because of family gatherings. Not because of corporate events.Because of one tiny baby girl.Liam stood in the nursery holding his daughter while she stared at him with wide, curious eyes."You know," he said seriously, "your mother is unreasonable."The baby blinked.Clearly listening."She says I can't buy you a pony."The baby made a small sound.Liam nodded."Exactly."The nursery door opened.Judith walked in."Who are you conspiring with?"Liam immediately looked innocent."Nobody."Their daughter chose that exact moment to squeal.Judith crossed her arms."She's definitely your daughter.""Because she's adorable?""Because she's helping you lie."Liam grinned.Three months into parenthood, he was still ridiculously obsessed with their daughter. Not that Judith was any better. The only difference was that she pretended to be rational.Liam didn't bother pr

Welcome to the World.....By four o'clock in the morning, Judith had officially decided that childbirth was a terrible idea.A truly terrible idea. The fact that it was too late to change her mind only made things worse."Liam."He immediately looked up from beside the hospital bed."Yeah?""This is your fault."Liam blinked. The nurse laughed. The doctor laughed.Even Judith looked like she knew the accusation made no sense.Unfortunately for Liam, logic wasn't particularly useful at that moment."I'm sorry.""You should be."Another contraction hit before she could continue.Judith grabbed his hand so hard he was fairly certain she was testing the limits of human bone strength. When it finally passed, she released him and took a slow breath.Liam looked at his hand. Then at her. Then back at his hand."I think that's the third time you've almost broken my fingers.""You'll survive."The nurse nodded."You'll definitely survive."Liam was beginning to suspect nobody in the room respe

The Worst Day to Go Into Labor...Judith was thirty-six weeks pregnant when she decided she was perfectly capable of attending a board meeting.Everyone else disagreed.Especially Liam."You're not going."Judith looked up from her breakfast."Watch me."Liam sighed. They were sitting in the dining room of the Lux estate, where he had somehow become a permanent fixture. At this point, nobody questioned it anymore.Even Julian had stopped complaining.Mostly."You were in the hospital three weeks ago.""I was fine.""The doctor said rest.""The doctor also said I could move around.""Not for twelve-hour meetings."Judith ignored him and continued eating.Across the table, Eleanor quietly moved her chair farther away.Richard did the same.Years of marriage had taught them when an argument was about to happen. And when survival required distance."I'll only be there for a few hours."Liam gave her a look. The kind that clearly said he didn't believe a word she was saying.Unfortunately,

The next few weeks went by surprisingly fast.Judith was now officially forbidden from going to the office unless absolutely necessary, which meant she spent most of her time working from home and complaining about it.Nobody sympathized.Especially not Liam."I'm bored."Liam glanced up from his laptop. They were sitting in the library at the Lux estate, both supposedly working."That's unfortunate."Judith narrowed her eyes."You don't care.""I care deeply.""You don't sound like it."Liam smiled without looking up."I've heard this exact complaint seventeen times this week.""You're exaggerating.""It was nineteen."Judith grabbed a cushion and threw it at him.Unfortunately, she missed.Liam looked far too pleased with himself. Before she could launch a second attack, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen. Her mother.Immediately suspicious."Hello?""Don't make plans for Saturday."Judith frowned."What plans?""You don't need to know."That was never a good sign."Mom.""Sa

Getting back together was surprisingly anticlimactic. There were no headlines. No dramatic announcements. No grand gestures. One day Judith and Liam were divorced people trying to co-parent, and the next they were somehow acting like a married couple again. The only difference was that this time they actually talked to each other.A lot.Three days after their conversation in the garden, Judith was sitting in the living room when Ava stormed into the house."Is it true?"Judith didn't even look up from her book."Good afternoon, Ava.""It's true."Judith sighed."Who told you?""Liam."That made her look up."He told you?"Ava looked deeply offended."Do you know how long I've been waiting for this?"Before Judith could respond, Ava threw herself onto the couch."I deserve compensation.""For what?""For emotional damages.""You weren't emotionally damaged.""I absolutely was."Judith laughed. For the first time in a long while, the future didn't feel complicated. It felt normal. And

The Answer....Judith barely slept that night. Not because she didn't know what she wanted. The problem was that she did.For years, she had imagined Liam standing in front of her and telling her he loved her. She had imagined him fighting for her, choosing her, seeing her.Now that it had happened, she couldn't stop thinking about everything that came with it.Love wasn't the issue.Trust was.Liam had spent months proving he had changed, but part of her still remembered the woman who used to sit alone at dinner while her husband worked late. The woman who waited for calls that never came. The woman who convinced herself that being lonely was normal.By the time the sun rose, Judith was still awake. And exhausted.Around eight o'clock, there was a knock on her bedroom door. Before she could answer, Ava walked in carrying coffee and a bag of pastries."You look terrible.""Good morning to you too."Ava sat down on the bed."You didn't sleep."Judith groaned."Is it that obvious?""You

Liam didn't sleep, he couldn't sleep. He sat in his study until nearly dawn, a glass of untouched whiskey on the table beside him.The city lights outside gradually disappeared as morning arrived, but his thoughts remained exactly where they had been for the past twelve hours.Judith was pregnant.

The following week, that was on Thursday, Judith had her prenatal checkup. She hated hospitals and it wasn't because she was afraid of them but because they were boring, very boring and most things she didn't understand.Unfortunately, nobody seemed to care about her opinion.Especially not Julian.
