The Kiss They Couldn't Ignore........

After the thunderstorm, things changed.

Not dramatically, not in a way anyone else could immediately see.

But something had shifted.

The hand-holding in the library should have been insignificant.

A brief moment.

An accident.

Yet neither Liam nor Judith forgot it.

The next few days felt strange.

Every interaction carried a new awareness.

Every glance lasted a little longer.

Every smile felt a little warmer.

And neither knew what to do about it.

Judith was the first to notice.

She was standing in front of her closet one morning when Ava walked into her room without knocking.

As usual.

"You smiled at your phone."

Judith looked up.

"No, I didn't."

"You absolutely did."

Ava dropped onto the bed dramatically.

"Was it Liam?"

"No."

Ava narrowed her eyes.

"It was Liam."

Unfortunately, it was Liam.

The message had been simple.

Doctor's appointment tomorrow at 10. Don't forget.

A normal message.

A practical message.

A message that absolutely should not have made her smile.

Yet here they were.

"You've become annoying."

Judith informed her friend

Ava looked delighted.

"You're smiling because of him."

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I'm pregnant."

"That's not a valid defense."

Judith threw a pillow.

Ava dodged it.

The next day, Liam arrived at the appointment twenty minutes early.

Again.

The receptionist smiled when she saw him.

"You're always early."

Liam looked completely serious.

"She's carrying my child."

The receptionist laughed.

By the time Judith arrived, he already had snacks waiting.

Water.

Fruit.

Crackers.

Things she liked.

"You're becoming impossible."

Liam handed her a bottle of water.

His smile appeared instantly.

And there it was again.

That stupid smile that made her forget what she was annoyed about.

The appointment went well.

The baby was healthy.

Growing normally.

Everything looked perfect.

For the first time in months, Judith felt completely at ease.

Until the doctor spoke.

"Have you thought about birthing classes?"

Judith looked at Liam.

Liam looked at Judith.

The doctor looked confused.

The instructor was enthusiastic.

At one point, Liam was instructed to help support Judith during a practice position.

The entire class watched.

Judith wanted the floor to open and swallow her.

Liam looked surprisingly calm.

"You're enjoying this."

She whispered.

"A little."

"I hate you."

"No, you don't."

The answer came so naturally that neither realized what he'd said.

Not immediately.

Then silence fell.

Brief.

Unexpected.

Dangerous.

Because they both knew he was right.

Judith looked away first.

Liam didn't push.

He never pushed anymore.

That was another thing that had changed.

Later that evening, after class ended, Liam drove her home.

The city lights blurred past the window

The radio played softly in the background.

Everything felt peaceful.

Until the car suddenly stopped.

"What happened?"

Liam looked through the windshield.

"Traffic."

Judith groaned.

Of course.

A major accident several streets ahead had completely blocked the road.

They weren't moving anytime soon.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Liam laughed.

Judith looked toward him.

"What?"

"You know something?"

"What?"

A faint smile touched his lips.

"A year ago, we would've hated being stuck together."

The statement caught her off guard.

Because he was right.

A year ago, they barely knew how to talk to each other.

Every conversation felt formal.

Now they could spend hours together without trying.

The realization settled softly between them.

"We were terrible at marriage."

Judith said quietly.

Liam laughed.

"That's one way to put it."

She smiled.
