Chapter 31"Bruce was supposed to take over, but he's been delayed. So you’re stuck with me for a little longer," Dex says as we walk back upstairs. "Oh, okay," I answer. I should be disappointed, but I don't mind. Claire almost falls asleep in my arms; I hope she'll sleep through the night in her new crib."I assume you don't want company?" Dex asks cautiously as we arrive at my room. I shake my head. "No, I need some space to process everything," I answer, somewhat guiltily. He nods. "But..." I say as he turns and starts to leave. "I wanted to ask you something." He looks at me, waiting for my question. Suddenly, I feel uncertain. "You can ask me anything," he says, encouraging me. "What happened earlier..." I begin, feeling myself blush. "Shouldn't the others have noticed?" I ask, avoiding his gaze. "Yes, and no," he answers with a smile in his voice."Because I'm an Alpha, my scent is more dominant and noticeable sooner. But since it took us some time to get back, it had already f

Chapter 33 - Lilly’s pov.I've just woken up to Claire's cheerful chatter when there's a knock on the door. The person on the other side of the door is rather impatient, because there's another knock, this time more urgent. "I'm coming!" I shout, slightly irritated. I don't know who it is, but he is lucky Claire's already awake. If they'd woken her, I'd be really pissed off."What?!" I hiss. "The Alpha is asking for you," Ronan says, ignoring my tone. "Oh, okay," I react, surprised, my anger instantly forgotten. "Right now, if you can," he says when I don't move to follow him. "Give me a minute to change into something presentable," I say, gesturing to myself in my nightgown."Oh, yeah. Of course. Sorry," he stammers. His cheeks flush, as if he's only just realized I'm wearing something that doesn't leave much to the imagination. He quickly looks away, and as I close the door to quickly get changed, I kick myself for not having thought about it myself when I opened the door.Once I'm

Chapter 35The rest of the drive is relaxed. Ronan and Dex chat about the company, using terms I've never heard of.I enjoy the passing scenery as much as possible. Ronan wasn't kidding about Dex's driving style; Compared to Dex, Brent was driving calmly. I wait for the familiar pain that accompanies thoughts of Brent, but to my surprise, it doesn't come. Or, the pain isn't as bad as it used to be. Part of me feels guilty about that; it's only been so long. Then I think of Beth's words: he would have wanted me to move on with my life, to be happy. I glance at Dex out of the corner of my eye. I might not be completely happy yet, but Claire and I are well on our way. Of all the places in the world, we've ended up here, a place so welcoming, where people truly care about us.I have to remind myself that there's still a chance Dex won't accept me as his mate. If the meeting with this Alpha goes wrong, if he convinces Dex that having a human mate will have terrible consequences for their s

Chapter 37 - Dex. Pov.To say I'm quite frustrated that Lilly and I were interrupted for the second time is an understatement. The moment I heard Ronan's voice in my head, I wanted to block it out. Only the urgency in his voice and the fact that he quickly mentioned Alex's name stopped me. After this morning, I was already struggling to contain myself when we were alone. I didn't want to give her the wrong idea, but after her comment about multiple men and the fact that I could feel her getting aroused, I lost control. I wanted to rip her clothes off and bury myself deep inside her. My cock reacts to my thoughts, and I curse under my breath. Hearing her chuckle, I look to the side; she's looking at me innocently. I can still smell her arousal; it's even worse in the car, and I have to force myself to think about the upcoming task."What did Ronan say?" Lilly asks, probably to distract herself. "Just that Alex was spotted, and I had to get to the office ASAP," I reply. "Okay, then, why

Chapter 39 Ronan and Reece are already waiting for us when we arrive at Dex’s office. My stomach is a knot of nerves, and my hands are starting to sweat. I know this is necessary, but I'm starting to doubt our decision. Is it the right time to tell? But then again, will it ever be the right time? Probably not…We enter the room without saying a word. We all dread what is coming. “I’m sorry, Lilly, but Beth can’t make it. Something came up at the B&B,” Ronan says, and I nod.We sit in silence, and after a couple of minutes, there’s a knock on the door. I feel nauseous.Bruce enters, followed by Lucy. Both have worried looks in their eyes. Bruce starts to walk over to me, but Dex interrupts him by telling them to sit down. He sits down, frowning. "What's going on? Did something happen?" Lucy asks as she sits down, too. "Is it Alex? Did you find him?" Bruce asks before we can answer."Yes and no," Dex answers curtly. "But that's not why you're here." Dex and Ronan exchange a glance, and
