EVANGELINEI knelt silently outside. The party was still in full swing. I could hear laughter and jeering from the crowd inside, obliviously unaware to what was going on with me.My knees burned from the snow digging into my skin. My bones shook, but I forced myself to remain upright. I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction of breaking, despite how badly my body craved it.Through the window, I could see Nicholas seated with his family in the private living room. He sat by the fireplace, taking a sip of something steaming from a mug. He wasn’t the one who sent me out here, but I felt rage directed at him.Out of everyone in his family, he was the only one who ever pretended to care about me. He was the only one who ever tried to help. Now that he wasn’t helping anymore, now that he’d turned a blind eye… it hurt. For too long, I’d deceived myself into thinking I had his protection and help. I’d depended too much on other people to save me. I couldn’t count on Alex, and I definitely couldn

EVANGELINEI must’ve stared for too long because Margaret turned to me. Our eyes locked and a slow smile grew on her lips.I turned to leave when I heard her voice as clear as day. “It looks like we have a stalker.” “What are you talking about?” Alex asked. “Is someone following us?”“It would seem so, considering that I see her everywhere I turn. It’s getting pathetic really.”“I don’t have time for this, Margaret,” Alex snapped. “Who is this person?”“Not a person… her.” She pointed a slender, red finger at me.Alex turned slowly, his eyes locking with mine too. His eyes widened in shock at first, but the shock quickly turned to annoyance. He stormed over to me and grabbed my arm a bit too harshly.“What the fuck are you doing here?” he hissed. “You should be at work.”I jerked my hand out of his hold. “It’s none of your business. Go back to whatever the fuck it was that you were doing.”He frowned. “You’re being childish. Stop acting like a brat.”My mouth fell open in shock.I wa

EVANGELINEOnce again, I was kept up by the pain from the mating bond.I tossed and turned all night, trying to find a position that eased the burning in my chest, but nothing worked. I buried my face into a pillow to muffle my screams and tried to remind myself of the money that Alex’s mother gave to me.It was the only thing stopping me from getting that divorce, but as the pain went on for over an hour, it didn’t seem like much anymore.Long after they’d finished having sex, the echoes of the pain and numbness lingered in my body. I couldn’t sleep, no matter how hard I tried. I lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling with tears at the back of my eyes.By the time morning came, I’d only slept for a few hours at most. My eyes were red rimmed and I had bags underneath them. I could’ve called in sick, but I’d be damned if I let myself stay home and think about Alex and Margaret.I drove to work in silence, making sure to get a cup of coffee on my way.It was as if the universe had plans

ALEXANDERMargaret stayed latched onto my arm, whispering about how she loved the flowers and how happy she was that I’d come to pick her up like she asked, but the truth was, I didn’t even know she asked. After texting Eva, I went to work. I didn’t glance at my phone again. I wasn’t even aware that she wanted anything from me. I’d momentarily forgotten that Margaret even worked at the hospital, but it was too late now. Pushing her away would only fuel more rumors and make life harder for her than it needed to be.“Come on,” she said, tugging my arm. “Let’s go home.”I barely paid attention to her words, but allowed her tug me, mainly because I wanted to see where Eva had gone. She walked past me as if I was nobody. I was her husband for fucks sake, and she had no right to leave with another man in front of me.Margaret was my sister-in-law and I was protecting her because she’d saved my life. That boy was a nobody to Eva. There was no reason why she should’ve been holding onto his ar

MARGARETThe nurses fawned as I showed them the bag of imported chocolates and pictures of jewelry.“This is beautiful,” one of them whispered, staring at a picture of a necklace with a rose quartz gemstone in the middle. “It must have cost a fortune.”“It did,” I said casually. “My boyfriend is very rich. He owns his own company. You all saw him yesterday, didn’t you?”They whispered between themselves as they continued to stare. Their gazes shifted between jealousy and longing. I couldn’t hold back my smile. If I’d known I’d get such a big reaction, I would have brought more things. After the display with Alex yesterday, I knew I’d have to strike fast before the shock wore down.As soon as I walked into the hospital this morning, people flocked over to my side, whispering about the handsome man that came to pick me up from work. Thankfully, they didn’t see the part where he drove off without me.A few of them had even done their own research on him, and I was so grateful that Alex n
