PAST SELENE’S POV: I woke up on the morning of my eighteenth birthday to absolutely nothing. Zero texts or wishes, even from Zoey. And I tried not to let it ruin my mood but it wasn’t exactly working out for me. It wasn’t supposed to be a big deal. Yes, turning eighteen felt like a huge deal for some people but I couldn’t afford to wish for anything when I hadn’t even gotten a measly text. Still, some quiet, hopeful part of me believed that maybe she was planning something. Maybe she’d show up in East End as a surprise.

Even though Leena seemed excited about the birthday party for her that evening, Lacee could tell that her sister was still upset with her for forgetting her birthday. It was Leena’s eighteenth birthday, a day they had been looking forward to for months. The two of them had been counting down the days until Leena turned eighteen, and yet, Lacee forgot the damn day.
