That is not to say he doesn’t care about us though.” We fell silent and I was already starting to doze off when I heard her murmur. “I wonder who’s going to be the new beta.” I was thoughtful for a while. “Probably your mate,” I replied “Probably,” she said.

His voice was so cold, clearly holding resentment for me, nobody needed a dictionary to know that he thought I was responsible for the deaths in the pack house. "Oh." I said in a low voice and was just going to resume my search for the Alpha when his voice stopped me. "I just want you to know that as Beta my faithfulness to the Alpha will never waiver, and I won't hesitate to clear whatever danger might lurk around him." Beta Devin said, and it really sounded to me like it was a strong warning. "And neither will I." I groaned. I cared about the alpha much more than any of them could ever, we shared the mate bond that meant he was mine, always.

Beta Benson started. "Now you should shut up. When I speak with an Alpha, a Beta should know his place. If my Beta was here, you could banter words with him all you want.
