A‍ wh⁠ispered wo⁠rd t​o​ the w‍r‌ong person​. I walk⁠ed to the‍ window.⁠ The d⁠ay was c‌lear. I could see⁠ the edge of the old oak,‌ its hollow now empty.⁠ My e‍vidence was gone from there‌, and sitting in a book behind me‍. The chain was comple⁠te‍.

She knocks on the door, but there's no answer. Rita decides to investigate further. She peers through the window, and sees that there's a book lying open on the floor. It's an old book with yellowed pages and a crumbling spine. The pages are fluttering in the breeze, as if someone had just put it down and walked away. Rita feels a chill run down her spine.

ELENA's POV I opened my eyes to find the ray of morning light shining through the glass window that had its curtain slightly open. I wanted to use my hand to shield the sunlight from shining in my eyes, but I found myself unable to. I was trapped in a firm embrace. The only thing I could move was my head, to which I turned around and was greeted with a breathtaking sight.

I got up from my bed and walked towards the window. Parting the curtains to the side, the blinding light of the sun piercing through the window panes made me close my eyes for a moment. I closed my eyes tightly then opened them slowly until I got adjusted to the glare. The moment I gazed into the distance, all I could see was the rich and sprawling greeneries below the wide canopy of the sky, animated by its sailing, fluffy clouds. From where I stood, it looked like I was on top of a hill overlooking the rolling stretch of farms and plain below.

Chapter: 56 ****** ALTAIR: As I slipped through the window into the familiar confines of my bedroom, the weight of the night pressed down on me like a shroud. The chill of the evening air followed me inside, but it did little to alleviate the heaviness in my heart. I closed the window behind me, the gentle click of the latch echoing with a finality I was unprepared to face. Tears spilled from my eyes the moment I fell onto my bed, the soft sheets offering no comfort against the turmoil within.

I read the same paragraph four times before I gave up pretending. I went to the window. His car was still there. I went back to my book. The rain got heavier as the evening went on, building into a proper storm. Thunder rolled somewhere in the distance and the windows rattled with the wind. I made more tea. I turned the lamp up. I finished two chapters without retaining a single word of either of them. Every time I checked the window his car was still there. By the time the rain finally started to ease I was done waiting for this to make sense on its own.

I spent more time reading, it was the only thing that was stopping me from losing my mind in this sick hole. The moon shone through my window that night, its call was as loud as sirens and I answered. From my bed, I could see the trees outside glittering from the silver light from the moon but tonight, even though there was nothing particularly special going on there, I found myself drawn to the window. A strange excitement took hold of me, maybe it was the thrill of adventure, and the desire to explore and discover what lied beyond my walls. Immediately I moved toward it, I knew just why.

I blew away the dust on it and ran my palm over the hardcover. "Encyclopedia on mythical Creatures" I said aloud as I read the title that was written stylishly. I walked over to the large window that would block the views of others from me yet giving me a perfect view of anybody that would come in. With a huff, I raised myself up and placed my bum on the cold stone and dropped the book on my lap.

The scent of the food is still in the air, like a memory of a kindness that was turned into an act of power. I walk to the window because windows are always small rebellions. The glass is thick and the bars outside are a promise. I close my eyes and let my mind do the thing it does best, which is to drag me back where I do not want to go. The memory unfurls like smoke.

It was my sanctuary, my place of peace and solitude. I walked around, dusting a few tables and arranging some books that were scattered around. Then I made my way to the windows and pushed them open, letting in the fresh air and the sound of birds chirping outside. I leaned against the windowsill, taking in the beautiful view of the forest.
