I see a sudden small flash of light, and my heart begins stampeding in my chest at the thought of being caught moving. I instantly still myself, bracing for the worst, but nothing comes. No one is here. What was that light? I look around the space again and confirm there aren't any windows, so it's not like a car driving by with lights on or something. Is it even daylight outside or the middle of the night? As a reflex, I lift my arm to check the time on my smartwatch. MY SMARTWATCH! That's what the light was! IT'S NOT DEAD! OH MY GOD.

Taking in a deep breath I release it slowly and gently squeeze the trigger. The light goes out so I repeat this by taking out both front lights, removing the blinding lights. We only communicate through text or call. I checked my phone but my inbox is silent as always. Light's name however is at the top and his last message is somewhat dominating my inbox. I don't want to reply because I don't want him to think that I somehow care about his whereabouts. L: Can't wait to see you, wife. Take care.

“It roars.” “It hums,” I said. “And that’s good. Humming means functioning.” “Humming means hungry.” “Your frame of reference is broken.” I flicked the headlights on. He recoiled. “They glow like the ring.” “They are LED.” “I thought that was the demon rectangle.” “That’s also LED.” “Why do your lights all bear the same name?” he demanded. “Are they related?” “They’re… diodes.” “That explains nothing.” “Good,” I said. “Welcome to modern technology.”

The library keeper stared. Alaric stared back. Then both of them laughed simultaneously. The crew exchanged confused looks. Hope pointed dramatically. Again. "You know each other." Elowen shook her head. "Not exactly." Alaric nodded. "Only through stories." Which somehow made perfect sense. And no sense at all. The First Light apparently operated according to very specific rules. Alaric approached the dock. Slowly. Carefully. His eyes never left Elowen. "You preserved them." Silence.

Stop running. I don’t. I can’t. I kiss him harder, deeper, until I’m not thinking about plans or revenge or names. Just the heat of him. The way he smells like cedar and storm. The way he says my name against my mouth like it’s a confession. “Alina.” It’s not a question. It’s a goddamn prayer. And then — The lights slam back on. The whole floor floods with white, fluorescent, merciless light. The AC kicks in. The servers beep. The world comes back.

“I guess we are not as advanced on the islands as you.” “Not a lot of areas are using this new weaponry yet,” Aaron explained. “I’ve got an extra in the car. I’ll be right back.” He rushed off to get the weapon, hoping that Taavi knew how to use it, and then returned to find they had already formulated a plan. Taavi and Jamie would go around the back of the first house while Aaron made entry from the front and cleared the small home.
